Arabel's Raven
Arabel's Raven | Joan Aiken
4 posts | 11 read | 3 to read
Young Arabel's life is changed forever when her father, a taxi driver, brings home an injured bird he finds in the street. This wacky raven eats everything in sight, answers the telephone by squawking "Nevermore!" and causes chaos wherever he goes--but Arabel loves her new feathered friend, whom she names Mortimer. This is the first volume of Arabel and Mortimer's adventures, brightened with hilarious illustrations by Quentin Blake.

I came across this childhood favorite on Hoopla, and it was every bit as hilarious and quirky as I remember. This book collects three stories featuring sweet Arabel and her terror of a raven, who goes around croaking “Nevermore” and eating everything in sight, sleeps in the coal scuttle (or the bread bin when he wants a change), and slides down the stairs on a tea tray (when he hasn‘t eaten the stairs, that is). ⤵️

BarbaraJean Favorite scene in this one is with babysitter Chris Cross (😂), when they go out to buy milk (because in their raucous games, Mortimer broke the milk bottle). They have to go to a vending machine because everything‘s closed, and end up trying out all the automatic machines in the train station (including one that blows your nose for you). Quentin Blake‘s illustrations are perfection. (edited) 1y

Day 5 #Curiouscovers- I discovered Joan Aiken‘s Wolves Chronicles children‘s books as an adult, and I love the ones that I‘ve read so far. Her books are so much fun to read!

This is another one of her books (not in the Wolves Chronicles series) that is still in on my TBR, about a little girl and her mischievous pet #bird named Mortimer. The illustrations in this edition are terrific.

Cosmic! I took these photos before I knew what today's #riotgrams #favoritechildrensbook was. I've got lots of favorites, mostly with animals.

BarbaraJean I adored the Arabel and Mortimer books when I was a kid! Great pick for this theme! 8y

I decided to give this one a try because I had recently read A necklace of Raindrops and like Aiken's style of storytelling, and this one is illustrated by Quentin Blake, who is amazing, of course. I wasn't a bit disappointed in it. This is a quirky little book about a sweet little girl and her quirky pet raven, Mortimer, and the quirky happenings that surround them. I loved it.
