Flashman
Flashman: From the Flashman Papers, 1839-1842 | George MacDonald Fraser
14 posts | 17 read | 8 to read
If ever there was a time when I felt that 'watcher-of-the-skies-when-a-new-planet' stuff, it was when I read the first Flashman."- P.G. Wodehouse Fraser revives Flashman, a caddish bully from Tom Brown's Schooldays by Thomas Hughes, and relates Flashmans adventures after he is expelled in drunken disgrace from Rugby school in the late 1830s. Flashy enlists in the Eleventh Light Dragoons and is promptly sent to India and Afghanistan, where despite his consistently cowardly behavior he always manages to come out on top. Flashman is an incorrigible anti-hero for the ages. This humorous adventure book will appeal to fans of historical fiction, military fiction, and British history as well as to fans of Clive Cussler, James Bond, and The Three Musketeers. Flashman is the first book of the famous "Flashman Papers series.

First installment of the "memoirs" of Harry Flashman, notorious bully of Tom Brown's Schooldays. Flashman is a coward, a liar, a toady, and an all-round whoring blackguard which makes his exploits irresistible. Fraser's pastiche of late-nineteenth idiom is pitch-perfect and this is fun-packed read as well as being the most enjoyable kind of history lesson.

Cathythoughts OMG !! I don‘t know this. But the expression on Harry Flashmans face 🙄🤭🤣 looks brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻What a great name (edited) 5y
Heatherfeather Is this satire? Looks so interesting 5y
Soscha This is a great read. I‘ve been trying to work my way through the series. 5y
Minervasbutler @Heatherfeather not so much satire, more swashbuckling historical with a dash of comedy. 5y

Flashman is the classic creep. I've posted an image from the 70's bbc series that i remember and Tom Browns schooldays was one of the books that was part of my childhood reading loves. So then i discovered George macdonald fraser's brilliant revisiting of school bully Flashman who despite incredible cowardice seems to come out on top - reminds me to revisit the series soon.

CarolynM My husband loves these, but I've never read any of them. I really should try one. 6y
Billypar Never heard of Flashman, but sounds pretty funny! 6y
Itchyfeetreader @CarolynM my husband also has been known to rave about these. I have never quite got round to picking one up though! 6y

CarolynM @Cathythoughts Thank you, I just photographed the shelf. I think they're in reverse order (my husband reads them, not me) but I thought they looked fine as they were. 7y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve not heard of this series. Will look it up 🙂 7y

Not as good as I remembered. Then again I'm not finding misogyny in any form amusing lately. Probably the wrong time to reread this book considering today's political climate. I'll give Flashy his due at a later date.

Shemac77 Thanks! It did look pretty amongst the leaves. I've enjoyed the book in the past, it's a fantastic comedy meant to poke fun however the story was flat this time. @Bette @becausetrains @thegirlwiththelibrarybag 8y

For me the ultimate #antihero is Harry Paget Flashman, the bully from Tom Browns School Day who goes onto be the greatest hero of the Victorian era. So he is a hero right? No he is a coward and a cad, a man for whom no vice is to low; murder, adultery, betrayal of trust, thievery, slave trading, yep all of these and more, while participating in the greatest events of his time. Despite it all you find yourself cheering for him #octphotochallenge

The Flashman series is a must read if you love well researched historical fiction and do not mind anti-heroes. Flashman was the school bully in Tom Browns Schooldays and was a coward, womaniser, and all round disreputable human being. This series tells how he becomes a great Victorian hero.

Oblomov26 Oh and a warning - this series is completely faithful historically and hence completely politically incorrect in modern times. Flashman is at various points a slave trader has a Victorian outlook on women, other nationalities and races. If you are easily offended - you will be offended. 8y
Soscha I'm not sure where I picked up this book but I was really impressed. I'm in for the rest of the series. I've heard in the subsequent books some of Flashman's rougher edges get smoothed a bit. 8y
Oblomov26 In some yes he seems to become a better man... And then he will do something truly horrible and you find yourself thinking ahhh there is the old Flashy 8y

Be forewarned: This is an accurate portrayal of what English colonialism looked like. The narrator is casually racist, sexist and no HSUS member. There is free use of "N".

That said, it's hell of a read, at turns both ghastly & hilarious. And our anti-hero freely admits he's a contemptible ass.

Flashy gets a letter from home.

I've never been fond of the Greek heroes either. Odysseus is the worst of the lot: a violent, lying, scheming, thieving, philandering butt.

Some brash opening paragraphs. What makes the bad boys so irresistible?
