Gap Creek
Gap Creek: A Novel | Robert Morgan
13 posts | 35 read | 23 to read
A New York Times Bestseller & Oprah's Book Club Pick Young Julie Harmon works hard as a man, they say, so hard that at times shes not sure she can stop. People depend on her to slaughter the hogs and nurse the dying. People are weak, and there is so much to do. At just seventeen she marries and moves down into the valley of Gap Creek, where perhaps life will be better. But Julie and Hanks new life in the valley, in the last years of the nineteenth century, is more complicated than the couple ever imagined. Sometimes its hard to tell what to fear mostthe fires and floods or the flesh-and-blood grifters, drunks, and busybodies who insinuate themselves into their new life. To survive, they must find out whether love can keep chaos and madness at bay. Their struggles with nature, with work, with the changing century, and with the disappointments and triumphs of their union make Gap Creek a timeless story of a marriage.

4/5 ⭐️ a really good tale about a girl from the mountains and all the struggles she endures. My favorite parts were reading about when she cooked!

Over 20 years old now, and I‘d never read this. Lyrically written portrait of an imagined life in the Southern Appalachians in the early 1900s. I kept thinking about all the stories my mother told me about my great-grandmother, and wish she‘d written them down.

What did those of you who read this think of it?

Janmah I read it a long time ago and remember nothing good or bad about it. It didn‘t leave any impression on me. 6y
TheWordJar I also read it a long time ago, but I do remember liking it, especially the main character (Julie?). It wasn‘t the type of book I normally read, so I remember being pleased that it was pretty good. 6y
toofondofbooks Long ago read for me too, but I remember liking it. 6y
RebL I read it when I was going through a Southern Gothic phase, so I probably loved it. 6y

This is my #bookhaul from date night last night. Walked by the lake at sunset and then went to a bookstore. I also received my next #covertocover book that same day.

Suet624 Great book selection! 7y
tpixie Great date! Great #bookhaul! On top of everything else, I'm trying to read all of Chris Bohjalian's books this year. Only 3 read so far! #bohjalian2017

Kangaj1 @tpixie Me too, though not necessarily all this year! I read my first two this year and loved them! 7y
tpixie @Kangaj1 I probably won't make it this year either, but at least make a dent ! 7y

Years ago (years before Kindles!), I was stuck somewhere and this was the only book at my disposal, when all I wanted to do was catch up on Harry Potter. I remember thinking, "Ugh! Early century Appalachia...Not my bag!" I was so wrong. One of the most satisfying reads I've had. I remember just feeling for and loving Julie Harmon Richards, the MC. If you haven't read it, I'd highly recommend it! #ruralsetting #aprilbookshowers

Reecaspieces I agree...great read! 8y

I could talk about Gap Creek for days: Julie Harmon as a character study, working "hard as a man" in Appalachia + about setting as character. I've read this brilliant piece of Americana a million times + will reread it until I die.

Here are a few #alltimefavebooks: it's so hard to make a small stack. I love so many! (Hard prompt, but fun!)

thec0zy Ooh! Son of Shadows is coming up on my tbr shelf! What makes it one of your faves? 8y
intothehallofbooks @thec0zy The Sevenwaters Series is FANTASTIC. Juliet M writes strong female heroines that I love. In this book, Bran's story is amazing. But no spoilers here. Uh-mazing, this book. Love love love. 8y
