4/5 ⭐️ a really good tale about a girl from the mountains and all the struggles she endures. My favorite parts were reading about when she cooked!

“Lord, for what we are about to receive make us truly thankful, and for the struggles of this life make us strong and worthy, and for the beauties of the world make us humble and grateful.” -Hank‘s prayer
Over 20 years old now, and I‘d never read this. Lyrically written portrait of an imagined life in the Southern Appalachians in the early 1900s. I kept thinking about all the stories my mother told me about my great-grandmother, and wish she‘d written them down.
Overall good book. Simply written with loveable characters.
What did those of you who read this think of it?

Finished!!! This was very good. Ended abruptly but I guess there's a sequel I didn't know about. I will be looking for it.
Day 4 5 hrs!
This is my #bookhaul from date night last night. Walked by the lake at sunset and then went to a bookstore. I also received my next #covertocover book that same day.
Years ago (years before Kindles!), I was stuck somewhere and this was the only book at my disposal, when all I wanted to do was catch up on Harry Potter. I remember thinking, "Ugh! Early century Appalachia...Not my bag!" I was so wrong. One of the most satisfying reads I've had. I remember just feeling for and loving Julie Harmon Richards, the MC. If you haven't read it, I'd highly recommend it! #ruralsetting #aprilbookshowers
I could talk about Gap Creek for days: Julie Harmon as a character study, working "hard as a man" in Appalachia + about setting as character. I've read this brilliant piece of Americana a million times + will reread it until I die.
Here are a few #alltimefavebooks: it's so hard to make a small stack. I love so many! (Hard prompt, but fun!)
