This was a fast read - a novella really - about a woman who is a second wife, and her obsession with her husband‘s former wife. She is also step-mother to his two older children. The book rips along - the husband is a bit of a blow hard, the former wife seems faultless, the step children have a good relationship with the new wife, and yet the new wife cannot seem to control her impulses leading to a wild ending.

I was intrigued with the narrative, was hoping the obvious foreshadowing was a red herring, and disappointed at how the book ends.

#TBRtemptation post 2! In this thin tale, an unnamed narrator loves with her new husband, his 2 teens, and his ex-wife, known only as she. The narrator becomes obsessed with the ex--will she ever measure up? What secrets does the 2 have? Marriage, infidelity, obsession, and charting love in all its phases. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Wilkie Love the cover art! 7y

Short bursts of the main character's thoughts (sometimes just a line or two), often circling around her husband's ex-wife, make this novel more a series of vingettes than a structured story. It's an interesting style that makes for a very quick one-sitting read with a sort of disconnect with no names used.

I wouldn't say I loved it but the stylistic devices intrigued me. It was very subtly done. Give it a try if you're doing the readathon.

I laughed out loud, almost uproariously, during the ending of this short, tight novel.

I sometimes wish I could be a writer. This thought gets pushed aside because I worry I‘ll run out of things to say. Enter Lily Tuck. Her books are striking. Her words are sparse but full of meaning and allow readers to use their imaginations to connect the dots. Her books echo our own minds, jumping around through time and space in tiny, important fragments.

This is my first Lily Tuck, though I now have a craving for more. I read Sisters in one sitting, propelled along by the narrator‘s voice and the slow burn to the denouement. Tuck is subtle, stylized and unsentimental while retaining a lovely empathy for her narrator. It‘s a hell of a wonderful read.

emilyhaldi Great review- I felt the same way! 7y

Unexpectedly took my car in, and they squeezed my service appt scheduled for next week in too. But I was unprepared, being without a book or a charger. Walked down to the library and read this novel. It's short and stylized, kind of like Fever Dream (but also nothing like Fever Dream). One new tire, service done, over 3 miles walked, one book read.

RealLifeReading I like that cover 7y

Short, fun book full of literary references. Most notably, a very strong resemblance to Daphne duMaurier's Rebecca (but, was unnecessary for the author to hammer home with "Last night I dreamt -- not of Manderley ..."). Quick psychological read.

LauraBrook I really like her writing. Reminds me I need to get back to her stuff. 7y

My first Lily Tuck! Enjoyed it immensely. I even gasped aloud near the end!

Note the guilty corgi who chewed up the bottom corner and back cover. She rarely chews on non-toy items.

Lola I picked up a Lily Tuck at ALA-possibly this one. It will be my first by her, too. Glad you loved it! 7y

#TBRtemptation post 1! #BEA17 edition! Slated for a September 5th release. From the National Book Award winner comes a psychological novel that looks at marriage, infidelity, and obsession. Tuck's unnamed narrator has married a husband with 2 teenagers, and can't stop feeling the indomitable presence of She, his first wife. Will the narrator equal and surpass She; will She heal from the betrayal between them; etc. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

LauraBrook Ooooh, was just wondering when she was going to publish again!! #stacked 8y
