This was one of the first books I requested when I first decided to do my #spaceracereading deep dive.

This is one of those graduation gift books that all seem to have the same “lessons” in them. It‘s interesting to read the anecdotes where Aldrin learned them, but the lessons themselves are not unique.

Also, the writing style put me off. It read like Aldrin and his co-writer we‘re trying to manage the optics of some embarrassing...⬇️

bookseller_cate Next book: I head to the beginning and look into the launch of Sputnik. 4y
SilverShanica When you‘re done your book dive you should check out the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. It covers the entire space race, from the original test pilots for the rockets through all the Apollo missions. One of the episodes even focuses on the wives of the astronauts and what they went through. 4y
bookseller_cate @SilverShanica Thanks for the tip. I may not wait for the end of the book dive. 😊 4y

Pickpick

Buzz Aldrin. Second person to walk on the lunar surface. He is funny and serious is the short collection of lessons he learned preparing for the Eagle descent. Buzz uses stories from his childhood all the way up to when he wrote this book in 2016. So many wonderful stories! Of the 13 lessons, two got to me. Second comes after first, and Failure is an option. Love how he is still working to get people to Mars. And helping veterans to fly again

Whether number one, or number two, or a number far down the pecking order regardless of your position never turn in less than your best work. Refuse to fail from lack of effort, whether physical conditioning or mental work- And don‘t fool yourself, thinking is hard work!

"As far as I know, I was also the first person to ever relieve his bladder on the Moon, which I did immediately after jumping off the ladder of the lunar module" - Buzz Aldrin

Great book by a great man, Buzz is very transparent and genuine in this book and I would recommend the read.

Anyone read this? I'm not much of a memoir fan, but I'm curious about this one.

Cinfhen I'm sure it's fascinating and humbling...I head Buzz Aldrin speak years ago and he was pretty amazing! 8y
readinginthedark I haven't read this one. There were several suggested astronaut memoirs in Grunt by Mary Roach, and I keep meaning to make a list. 8y
