Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great
Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great | Judy Blume
18 posts | 90 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
From Judy Blume, bestselling author of"Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing"! Fans young and old will laugh out loud at the irrepressible wit of Peter Hatcher, the hilarious antics of mischievous Fudge, and the unbreakable confidence of know-it-all Sheila Tubman in Judy Blume s five Fudge books. Brand-new covers adorn these perennial favorites, and will entice a whole new generation of Fudge and Judy Blume fans. As a kid, Judy Blume was my favorite author, and"Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing"was my favorite book. Jeff Kinney, author of the bestselling Wimpy Kid series"

Not my kids‘ favorite as there‘s a lack of Fudge.

I never take it for granted when a guest on my podcast shares a personal story about what connects them to a book. That‘s what happens on today‘s new episode! Tune in to hear from the lovely author S.K. Ali about her memories of Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great. We discuss childhood fears, summer camp, slam books, old tech, dog dating, and swim tests. Link to listen in my bio!

Another good read aloud with my 8 year old. At first he was hesitant because it featured Sheila not Fudge but he ended up liking it. Sheila and her family move to Tarrytown for the summer and Sheila must confront her fears, make new friends, and adjust to her new environment. She grows over the course of the book in ways that are relatable to kids. Learns it‘s ok to admit not knowing how to do things, etc...

Good evening @LapReader
I set up an old cabinet someone was throwing out, that my husband painted zebra striped, as an impromptu neighborhood library while the public libraries are closed and schools are closed. I read the tagged book in one sitting before sending it out. I hope you are well. ❤️💭 #isolationinteractions

LapReader Our schools and libraries are still open unfortunately. The Australian government is very behind with its reaction to protecting us. 5y
BookishMe Wow! Wonderful initiative 👏🏽👏🏽 5y
mrsmarch @LapReader I‘m a little surprised, given Australia‘a geographic proximity to Asia, where the outbreak started. Thinking of you 5y

#Booked2020 #winter #ReadInADay You know , when the whole world kinda blows , it makes you feel better to read some Judy Blume!Honestly , I was too old to read them in “real time” but there‘s no stopping me now! Sheila is a force of nature , she needs to learn to get along with dogs though. 🐶😂

Cinfhen #Preach 🙌🏻 5y
LeahBergen This was read to my class in elementary school. 💕 5y

I love Blume's writing but, CHRIST, I cannot tolerate Sheila Tubman!!! I'd tell my kids not to play with her. Now I know why I never read this as a kid! Lol... good thing I get Peter & Fudge back in the next book!

I'm sorry, but I ABSOLUTELY HATE Sheila Tubman and I'm so glad that Peter Hatcher tortured her endlessly!!!! #sorrynotsorry #shesawful

IamIamIam @LibrarianRyan I feel like an awful adult saying that but I'd tell my kids not to play with her... 🤣 7y
quanners She‘s a kid who needs a good old fashioned butt whooping! She‘s an incorrigible brat from hell! 5y

#AlltheBooksof2017 I don't really do many #rereads because #somanybookssolittletime but I did revisit these two for challenges this year. Wizard of Oz works better as a movie (I think @rubyslippersreads agrees!!!) and as an adult I found Shelia annoying, whiny & not very likable 😬😜‼️ Maybe, its better off keeping these type of books in my memories 💚

Reviewsbylola Shelia is a brat!!! 😂 7y
emilyhaldi I hate when rereads aren‘t as good as you remember them 👎🏻 7y
rubyslippersreads I agree 100% movie-over-book in the case of Oz! (Only the 1939 classic, though. 😊) 7y

While I didn't enjoy this #audiobook as much as the other Fudge books, there are a lot of unique and entertaining parts of this story. I liked how it gave insight into Sheila's character, showing how scared she is of many things and always tries to hide her fear from others. It's great to see a flawed female character like Sheila.

RebL This is one of my childhood favorites. 7y

Book 5 for #24in48 Decided to go old old school with a reread and a #birthdaychallenge read (1972)
This book was pretty awful 😒Shelia is an annoying, bratty, braggart who can't tell the truth ( she's not mean spirited or malicious) just a kid who is overly insecure 😟 somehow at 10 Sheila was cool, not so much at 50😜I'm wavering with my rating because I'm obviously not the target audience...

LindsayReads I remember having the same problem when I reread this. I thought the was the best when I was in 4th grade; as an adult, not so much... 8y
Cinfhen @LindsayReads I'm disappointed but really, what was I expecting?!? Also book was written in 1972 but my edition tried to "modernize" the story by adding the use of computers! I'm pretty sure no 10 year old was using a desktop in 1972 ? 8y
LindsayReads It's so weird they've been doing that to Judy Blume books. I can't imagine it makes *that* much of a difference. 8y

Reviewsbylola I loved Sheila as a kid but I'm not sure what my reaction would be to read her now! 8y
Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola kind of sucked 😝I probably would have better enjoyed Blubber or 8y
DebinHawaii I should go back and reread it. I remember liking her in grade school but would probably feel the same way now! And yeah, I don't like that they try to modernize the books! 😬 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I used to read Just As Long as We're Together on repeat... I wonder if I dare a reread!? 8y
Cinfhen @thegirlwiththelibrarybag somehow I NEVER read that JB. Maybe it will read better because it's a YA instead of middle grade🙄 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Cinfhen, maybe! It was about best friends who don't speak over something petty for most of the book? (It's been awhile, there was probably more to it) 😂 8y
Cinfhen @thegirlwiththelibrarybag sounds deep! 😹my daughter used to be obsessed with a similar series 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Cinfhen, I also remember the main character obsessively worrying over her braces locking with her crushes braces if they kissed... I really can't remember how that turned out! 8y
Cinfhen Well now I think I may need to read the book to find out how that played out @thegirlwiththelibrarybag ❣️ 8y

When I picked my nieces up at school for our weekly nieces-aunt book club I had a wave of nostalgia when we visited the scholastic book fair - and my wallet took a hit too! 📚❤️

BookishMarginalia Love those! 8y
LeahBergen Ooo! What did you buy?? 8y
bookishfurmom I went with my best friend's daughter and it was so exciting. Book fairs were my favorite time of year 😂 8y

Titania Ours is coming soon! Some anon patron gives every kid in my daughter's school $7 to buy a book (and only books). The excitement as every single kids gets to buy a book is palpable. It's such a happy thing. ❤️😊 8y
Laura317 Can I just say what an awesome aunt you are?! I live that you and your nieces have a book club together. 8y
Graciouswarriorprincess I love Scholastic! I am lucky enough to volunteer at their warehouse sale and I get paid in books.📚 8y
[DELETED] 2852984487 *Le Sigh* My son has graduated, and so no more school book fairs. I guarantee that I looked forward to them far more than he ever did. 8y
Yournewfriendsams Scholastic Book Fair was so 🔥 #bestweekofchildhood 8y
ApoptyGina69 I'm so glad that's still around for new generations. I like how we all wax nostalgic over those catalogs when Scholastic comes up in the threads. Wish I'd kept a few. 📚 8y
LauraBrook Oh my gosh, this makes me want to wander into my nearest grade school book fair! I should look up when they're happening. Man, how awesome! Scholastic ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 8y
Bibliogeekery @LeahBergen - I let them choose so it was a book about American Girl dolls, an activity book about emojis and a journal with a kitten and a cupcake on it. None of these would have been my choice ☺️ but the kids were thrilled! 8y
Bibliogeekery @Titania - that is so sweet! What a great thing to do! 8y
Bibliogeekery @Laura317 - thank you, that's so kind of you. I had an awesome aunt in my life so I'm just trying to follow in her footsteps 8y
Bibliogeekery @Graciouswarriorprincess - great volunteer gig!! 8y
Bibliogeekery @ApoptyGina69 - I was just thinking of those catalogues today when I was at the sale. I'd love to see one too. They filled me with such delight! 8y

Another question: I'm looking for recommendations for read-aloud books, audiobooks, and movies for my road trip with my nieces (ages 6 and 9). I got some great Litsy suggestions awhile ago on this topic but my library doesn't have all the titles that were suggested. They've loved Harry Potter, the Mysterious Benedict Society and Lemony Snicket. I need some movie titles too in case I have a migraine and need to hide them under headphones for a bit.

Well-ReadNeck All of the books in the Bunnicula series are fabulous on audio!! 8y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Mouse and the Motorcycle is good on audio. Also Stewart Little would be a good movie. 8y
Mayread Neverending Story-- book & film. The book has 2 parts so they get the sequel to the movie. 8y

LibrarianJen I've heard good things about the Percy Jackson series on audio. 8y
ErinRich The Princess Bride movie! (Not the audiobook though because it's abridged and very short.) 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Id recommend anything by kate dicamillo (though I havent read them all). And James and Giant Peach was a hit with both my kids. 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I also second @Well-ReadNeck - Both kids loved Bunnicula! 8y
youngreadrshelf Chasing Vermeer - the puzzles are fun. The Tale of Despereaux. 8y
