This was a question raised by my buddy read partner and me when we were discussing our book. We have different ways of rating books, which is pretty cool. Then I started to wonder, How do you all rate your books? Do you have a system? Do you take off points for certain things?

How do you decide how many stars to give it?

I would love to know!!!

My answer is in the comments.

AsYouWish 1. Plot-it has to have a good plot. 2. Interest Level-was I interested in it? 3. Page turner-did I want to keep going or did I find myself taking frequent breaks and wandering to other books? 4. Characters-did I love them, hate them, love to hate them? 5. Would I reread it or recommend it to other people? 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa 5 Stars is I loved it! I would reread it and/or recommend it, just great reading experience 4 Stars is very good, may not have been a favorite/re-read or may have been. But it was engaging, fit it‘s genre and/or age group, enjoyable escape at least. 3 is ok, I liked it, or maybe it was good literature, but I personally was lukewarm after reading it, nothing really wrong with it, just more ok or eh feeling after I was finished. Riveted_Reader_Melissa 2 Stars and 1 Stars I give out rarely, it doesn‘t happen often, for me those are the “bad grades”. 2 Stars had problems, problems that I thought most readers would see, no matter their personal tastes. 1 is bad, it was bad, I hated it, something along those lines. It‘s very rare for me, because I know everyone likes different things, so I try not to “bash” books indiscriminately, I also know authors really count on reviews....so when ⤵️ (edited) 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...in doubt, I usually give the benefit of the doubt in my ratings in the author‘s favor. 5y
TEArificbooks 5 ⭐️ I was transported into the book, I felt like a character in the book. 4⭐️great story and characters and good writing 3⭐️ pretty decent but something was wrong with it and and that wrong thing lowered the rating 2 or 1 ⭐️ means so much was wrong I couldn‘t get past anything of it and bailed or only finished for book club 5y
wideeyedreader For me, a 5 star book is an instant favorite, one I fell in love with. 4 star books are good, and I really enjoyed them, but I don‘t love them as much. 3 star books are okay. They‘re not super great, but not terrible. 2 star books are somewhat redeemable but had lots of problems/wasn‘t enjoyable for me. And 1 star books are trash in my opinion. I rate based mostly on my enjoyment 5y
AsYouWish @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love your break down! I do the same thing with my ratings too and try to be nice about it because someone took the time and energy to write a book and then put it out into the world for others to read. 5y
