9 posts | 12 read | 11 to read
What do Amy Poehler, Bjork, Felicia Day, Martha Stewart, Miranda July, and Zooey Deschanel have in common? They re just a few of the amazing women proving that geek is no longer a four-letter word.In recent years, male geeks have taken the world by storm. But what about their female counterparts? After all, fangirls are just like fanboys they put on their Imperial Stormtrooper Lycra pants one leg at a time. Geek Girls Unite is a call to arms for every girl who has ever obsessed over music, comics, film, comedy, books, crafts, fashion, or anything else under the Death Star. Music geek girl Leslie Simon offers an overview of the geek elite by covering groundbreaking women, hall-of-famers, ultimate love matches, and potential frenemies, along with her top picks for playlists, books, movies, and websites. This smart and hilarious tour through girl geekdom is a must-have for any woman who has ever wondered where her sassy rebel sisters have been hiding."

Bailedbailed

I read the majority of another chapter and I just can‘t. I flipped through and scanned over the rest of the book.
Maybe 5 WOC mentioned (generous on 5).
Every chapter ended with a description of what that geek girl‘s ideal man. - Just no even in 2011 just let women love stuff without men involved.
It was either super current topic (Twilight) or older (Riot Grrl era).
If there is an updated edition of this book cool, it is super dated.
👇🏼

OrangeMooseReads 👆🏼 the idea is great, love the idea. The approach and execution terrible. More research needed to be done, more depth was needed. It needed to be about the “geek girls” it needed more about the culture not just 4-5 white women in that genre. It could have been so good. I am incredibly disappointed. 1y

The struggle is real with this. Published in 2011 there is praise for some people that were found to be super problematic. Holy Twilight! I swear by all things if there is more about Twilight I might throw this book.
I‘m leaning hard on DFN- I just skimmed and skipped most of the “Film Geek” chapter because ALL WHITE WOMEN! All the women mentioned white all the characters white. You‘re gonna tell me there isn‘t 1 WOC that could make it in 2011?

OrangeMooseReads It was the same in the “Book Geek” chapter as well all white women. There are some amazing classics written by WOC. 1y

My #bedsidestack
I‘m kind of on a nonfiction kick at the moment.
I think I‘m going to start with the tagged book cause it‘s short.
And of course Miss Belly #littenkitten

Amiable “Yale Needs Women” is a really good read! 1y
OrangeMooseReads @Amiable @Megabooks thanks! That may need to be the next read 🙂 1y

21 hour check in and I have 10 hrs logged. Not too bad! Switching things up from Brother by Ania Ahlborn to Geek Girls Unite for a bit of a lighter read for a little while. @24in48 #24in48 #readathon #24in48readathon

Day 2: 13/35 w/bookends (that resemble the TARDIS)

sammisho I have had my eyes on those Tardis bookends for a while on amazon! 7y
BrainyHeroine @sammisho they are $10 blue telephone boxes not the actual TARDIS, but they work perfectly for our Doctor Who themed bedroom. 7y

Bailedbailed

I think this passage sums up why I bailed at 9%. The premise--to unite geek girls of all walks and stripes--is consistently undermined by talking down to us like we are complete outsiders to geekdom in general. It doesn't help that the book at 5 years old is already sadly dated, but clunky attempts at humor come off as more insulting than anything.
Now taking all your suggestions for nerdy, geeky, gaming, fandom-honoring books! 🤓

HedgeWhitney A Hundred Thousand Worlds is a great nerd/comic con-ish read. 🤓 8y
Carol @HedgeWhitney I am going to stack that. Thanks! 8y

Carol @angrylilasian I have it and I'm sad to say I haven't read it yet (what is wrong with me?) I will fix that soon. Thanks for the rec!! 8y
Treatyoshelf I bailed on Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy for the same reason. It's like, We're not to late to this, YOU are. And yet you wrote a book for us?! 🤔 8y
Carol @Treatyoshelf I've got that one checked out from the library. I'll give it a shot but it's really good to know you had the same reaction to that as I had to this book. Kind of makes me want to write a good book about this topic. 🤓 8y
Carol @ReadingEnvy @angrylilasian great minds think alike you two!! 8y

3% in and this is the second specific mention of a D12. While I am exaggerating when I say no one uses them, it is definitely rarely used. It's not like a D20 which is the basis of a lot of modern tabletop RPGs. Did she mean to say D20 but doesn't game so she got it wrong & editorial staff are clueless, too?
I am out-geeking the geek girl author! Gah I hope I can gloss over any more of this tiny-but-huge-to-me issues as I keep reading.

Eyelit While I didn't catch that particular gaffe (sadly not a gamer, yet), I did catch quite a few pop culture errors sprinkled throughout the book. I loved the idea of the book, but think the author could have been more knowledgeable about the subjects she wrote about. 8y
balletbookworm I gave this 3 stars when I read it. I found the smarmy, fake-friendly, frenemies tone - from a book that specifically asks us to be more welcoming to each other - a bit much to take 8y
Carol @Eyelit @balletbookworm thanks, I am starting to see the same and wonder if I will just bail. There are so many good books waiting for me on my kindle right now to waste time on this. 8y

readinginthedark We sold dice at the bookstore where I worked until a month ago, and I had customers who would come in asking for 12-sided dice... 8y
Carol @readinginthedark oh they get used but usually either just for a particular class (barbarian) or for specific weapon damage. My point is that it's not a thing in geek gaming culture to reference d12s in a social context. Usually the saying is "she rolled a 20" or a "nat 20" (natural, without any bonuses). Top portion of this strip gives context http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0121.html 8y
readinginthedark @Carol Oh okay. I'm not much of a gamer, as you can tell. Although there was a game my siblings and I played a long time ago...Heroes Quest? Something like that. So fun! 8y

I thought this one could use a few more sets of sharp eyewear. 🤓🤓
I haven't seen anyone talking about this one. I hope that's not an omen!

SoniaC Looks interesting. I look forward to hearing what you think. 8y
Carol @SoniaC I bailed. Reading it was borderline insulting. Sad because her premise is that geek girls need to stick together and understand each other. Too bad her book came across as talking down at best and insulting at worst. 😔 8y
SoniaC @Carol well no need to add that to the TBR. Thanks. 8y
