Enjeela was growing up in a well-off family in Kabul when the Soviet Union invaded. The family had to flee but was fragmented in the process, with Enjeela and three of her siblings going by foot over the Hindu Kush to Pakistan. This is an extremely interesting story and gets an A+ for that, but the writing is a bit juvenile. (It reads in places like a children‘s book.) Also, the audiobook isn‘t great.

It took me a while to finish this but overall, it was good. I've read quite a few books about Afghanistan lately and sometimes it just becomes too heartbreaking. The writing could have been a bit better but it wasn't bad. 3,5 ⭐

A breathtaking memoir of the author and her siblings making a journey out of Afghanistan and into India. Enjeela writes with such beautiful descriptions!

This is a true story about a family that escapes Afghanistan during the Russian war. It is told in a way that is oddly detached from feeling, considering what they go through is so harrowing, but I think that is likely due to trauma. It matters how you treat refugees/people. This could happen to any of us if our country is invaded. Nobody deserves this, and they were the lucky ones. Overall, it was a good book, just a little distant or something.

While my daughter is skiing here in Breckenridge, I am working on my book log. Here I‘m inputting books I‘m reading for #nonfiction2019

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm glad to see someone else who would rather stay in rather than ski. Hope you are by a cozy fire with nice cup of tea. 6y
Texreader @Crinoline_Laphroaig Unfortunately no fire or tea at that moment but I sure marched back to my room and made some yummy hot tea thanks to your reminder! (edited) 6y

This is a touching memoir, told by the author about her young life in pre-Soviet invasion Afghanistan and her lengthy, difficult trek to safety and security. It seems simply told, but it is told from the perspective of such a young girl, a refugee from war, learning the cruelties of this world. I found it very hard to put down, hoping so hard that the girl would find happiness again.

Daisey Your review sounds great, and I‘m glad to see it since I finally made a choice and downloaded this as my February prime pick. 6y

This place where you are right now, God circled on a map for you.” “God means for us to be here, suffering?” “He does not mean for people to do terrible things. Soldiers kill and murder and do harm because they are evil. But God knows we have come to this place, that we have things to learn so we can grow as human beings, as spiritual creatures. It‘s not enough to have all the things you wish for to make us comfortable. We must have much more.” ❤️
