An old-school newsroom drama based on the JAL123 air tragedy, full of details of the workings of a newspaper in the 1980s & how news gets produced. It's also a psychological drama that follows the protagonist, a reporter, through career & personal struggles in the aftermath of the event. It was both suspenseful & boring in parts, much like life, & I could leave it & pick it up any time & be drawn back into the story. A compelling read. #TBRtarot

I know this photo isn't clear but don't want to reveal too much as it's a #lmpbc #round004 #groupv book. As I bought a paperback copy for my shelves yesterday whilst in Uxbridge for a hospital check-up I made notes in my notebook so that I could annotate @Lel2403 hardback when I got back today! 5 ⭐ and I'm definitely on the lookout for Six Four.

Lel2403 I‘m glad you‘re enjoying it 📖❤️🎄 6y

Just signed up for #newyearwhodis by @monalyisha as I enjoyed #freakyfriday (in fact at least one of those books made this list).

@Lel2403 I already know that the #lmpbc book is getting a high rating from me, so it's gone on the list! 😍

jenniferw88 @monalyisha i wasn't quite sure which genres my list comprised of so i just ticked all that might apply! 6y
monalyisha Sounds good! I‘ll scope it out. 😉 Thanks, @jenniferw! (Some of my match‘s #freakyfriday books made it on to my list, as well. 🙌🏻) 6y
RadicalReader @jenniferw88 wonderful name for a hashtag I love it amazing how much this topic could be altered to make some pretty wonderful scenarios definitely a trend I never saw coming 6y

Passenger plane goes down, biggest crash ever and the local newspaper reporters are being outgunned by national media. The story alternates infighting between the newsroom and other corporate factions, from physical to political, journalistic ethics, corruption, and the effects on the reporters‘ lives 17 years later. The crash is based on fact; the story is relevant to the role and meaning of media, though some practices are uniquely Japanese.

alanacristin I was just thinking this sounded like Six Four with reporters and then saw the cover 😂 6y

First off, Seventeen isn't a mystery/thriller in the usual sense. The tension of this story takes place in the newsroom much like All The President's Men or Spotlight. Seventeen years after a plane crash, the principle character tries to go back and unravel the mystery at the core of the story. I enjoyed the book, but at times got bogged down in the minutiae of rock climbing and newspaper deadlines. #netgalley

This book is full of great story but I have a serious problem it has to go back to the library tomorrow and I have not finished it 😢

what would you do?
#librarybook #books #reading #HideoYokohama #seventeen #bookwormsunite #bookworm #currentlyreading 📚

jhod If I was enjoying it and the fine wasn't exorbitant I would keep it for a few more days until I'd finished it.... I know that makes me bad! 6y
LoveToReadLiveToRead I would keep a hold of it if you think you‘ll finish it quickly and the fine isn‘t crazy. I actually don‘t feel too bad for incurring library fees as they are so underfunded, I feel like every fine I pay is doing my little bit to help! 😂 6y
kaysworld1 @LoveToReadLiveToRead That's one way of looking at it 😂 I'm going to keep that in mind for future books x 6y
kaysworld1 @jhod I'm going to see if I can have it renewed if I take it in for them to see the book. at the library you can only renew 3 times before they want to see it. 6y

There's a tiny mall near my place that has a weekend flea market. I went there to pick up some used books I'd reserved ? There are bookstores too & I'll always stop by "just to look". While there I noticed a guy observing me. When I went out he followed me & asked "Do you read fiction?" I was like, "Ye...ess?“ ?? Then he gestured that we should go to a corner & he pulled this out of his bag. It's 70+ ringgit in stores & he sold it to me for 10.

batsy I mean I was thinking WHAT IN DODGY BOOK PUSHING IS HAPPENING but the guy seemed decent enough and when he said the words "Do you read fiction? I have a book" I realised I was so curious and had to see what book and what do you know, it's straight out of my TBR. And this is how I might die one day, having gone to some back alley because someone said, "I have a book" ??‍♀️ 7y
batsy Also he literally pitched the book to me by using the magic words, "It reads like a blend of mystery and true crime" and I was like, "Do you follow me on Litsy?“ ???
7y
rockpools 😂😂😂You be careful out there! 7y

batsy @GatheringBooks @TrishB I feel like this is a #blameitonlitsy too. Book buying was never this exciting before 😂😂 7y
erzascarletbookgasm 😂 dear me! But what a steal, wonder where he got it. 7y
AceOnRoam LOL. You went to the corner? I totally would have followed him too 🤓 7y
RohitSawant 😂😂 This has me both laughing & a little worried! Also, I would've done the exact same thing. 🕵🏽‍♂️📚 7y
whimsy How very Hideo Yokoyama of him! 7y
Centique Whoa. Who knew there was a nefarious underworld of book gangsters? What happens when librarians go bad, huh? 😂 This is the best anecdote though! 7y
Cathythoughts That‘s great ... 😬. Alls well that ends well. There‘s a short story in this 👍🏻❤️ 7y
Mimi28 It‘s kind of creepy that he knew books are like drugs to you, lol. 7y
BarbaraBB Seems a great read. I hope you‘ll get to it soon and tell us all about it! 7y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm He said he bought it at full price and now just wants to sell it at any price 🤔 Perhaps he can't stand to look at it anymore? I'm not sure 7y
batsy @AceOnRoam I did 😂 7y
batsy @rohit-sawant 😂😂 I'm glad to hear that! 7y
batsy @whimsy Right? 😎 7y
batsy @Cathythoughts 😂❤️ You're right, there's a story in this! 7y
batsy @BarbaraBB Me getting to it soon... Fingers crossed 🤞🏽😂 7y
batsy @Mimi28 I know, right? It was so bizarre in that sense! 7y
Tanisha_A 😶😂 So funny and so creepy! So really, he had just this one book? After he gave it to you, he just left? 7y
Mimi28 Real hustlers know what people‘s weaknesses are. I honestly think most drug dealers could run multi- million dollar legal companies with all the networking and study of human behavior, and ability to persuade almost anyone to do anything, and they have to be great with numbers too. Ok, actually Joel Osteen said that, ( he‘s a popular pastor here) but I think it‘s true. He knew he could find someone to buy books near a flea market that sells books 7y
batsy @Tanisha_A Yes, he sold it to me and then I said thank you and left 😆 7y
batsy @Mimi28 You're so right. He actually didn't see me at the flea market stall but he entered the bookstore where I was browsing after me. And I was picking up all the books and looking at the prices and putting it down 😂 So he definitely saw how he could approach me with a deal. 7y
Mimi28 Be careful with this guy, he may just be trying to earn your trust to draw you into something deeper- which may be good or bad. I don‘t want to scare you, it‘s probably just the cynical girl from the west side of Chicago that has seen a lot of stuff go down in me. Like someone said this would make an awesome short story with all of the twists and turns it could take. 7y
tjwill 😯 7y
batsy @Mimi28 Not at all, I understand what you mean. I will definitely keep that in mind and if I do see him around again it's not a funny story anymore! 7y
Mimi28 I‘m sorry. My intention wasn‘t to take the fun out of it. I was just more concerned for your well being. The new apartment is a lot closer to a post office and less than a block away from a library, but I still have overdue books and your package here. I will send it soon, I promise. Moving 35 years worth of stuff to the other side of town and sorting through stuff like your first doll that you had when you were 3 that only has one leg is rough 😂 7y
batsy @Mimi28 Please don't be sorry! ❤️ I meant that if I saw him again trying to sell me books I'd definitely not be amused anymore 😬 And please don't even worry about the package at all. I'm sure it's rough! Did you keep the doll? 😁 7y
Mimi28 Lol, okay that makes me feel a lot better thanks. Yes, the doll is right here with the tiny rocking chair I had when I was 4 and a Ronald McDonald doll someone gave me, lol. I have at least 30 stuffed animals to go through. My boyfriend who helped us move said 75% of this stuff should be on eBay, lol. 7y
Kalalalatja Oh my, I would both be scared and intriqued 😂😂 7y
batsy @Mimi28 LOL! I know, I had a panda bear since I was about 3 that I adored and it literally fell apart and I was devastated. I would hang on to the stuffed toys too but they're one giant dust magnet and a hassle when moving 😆 7y
batsy @Kalalalatja Exactly 😂 7y
youneverarrived 😂😂 this genuinely made me laugh out loud haha strange but intriguing 😆 7y
batsy @youneverarrived I know, right 😂 7y
Bookzombie Wow, I don‘t know what I would do in this situation, but this story also made me laugh out loud. (edited) 7y
LeahBergen Bahaha! 😆😆 7y
readordierachel Hahaha! Wow. 7y
readordierachel "Do you follow me on Litsy?" ??? 7y
BiblioLitten 😁 shady but funny 7y
batsy @LeahBergen @ReadOrDieRachel I'll file this under book serendipity? 😂😂 7y
batsy @BiblioLitten Exactly that! 7y
Suet624 Love everything about this post and the comments. What a bizarre encounter. 7y
batsy @Suet624 Utterly strange but still totally pleased about getting a book at that price 😆 7y

Mehso-so

Hideo Yokoyama‘s novel (translated from Japanese by Louise Heal Kawai and originally published in Japan in 2003) is being mis-marketed as an investigative thriller but is more of a literary historical piece looking at journalism in the 80s and its office politics while tagging on a limp middle-aged man in crisis plot such that while it‘s an okay read it never catches fire and doesn‘t offer much that‘s new.
