A unique twist on existing fears of the singularity, the idea of a truly self-aware AI developing consciousness, and perhaps the first time in the series where murder isn't the start of the investigation. I'm intrigued to see if we get further interaction with The Librarians; there's certainly room for the magical tech introduced to make a reappearance. 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 Still, I think I prefer when Peter's not undercover, and when he's dealing with the more absurdly fantastical than plausibly sci-fi. Happy to report the next in the series seems to be starting out that way! ☺️ 6mo
BookmarkTavern The next one is so much better! I was similarly disappointed with this one! 6mo

Uh so he just change careers??? What the heck happened 😲🤨 I still have questions

julesG Isn't that what you're supposed to do, get up in the morning and change your career? 😜 I remember being flummoxed about this as well. You reading the series really makes me want to re-read. Guess I know what audiobook will accompany me and my outdoor knitting today. 😁 7mo
Ddzmini @julesG Well I was just he left working as a detective… why that‘s a great job and he was learning magic why … I guess I‘ll find out 7mo

Continuing with my re-listen of this fun series. There‘s a cool interview at the end with Ben and Kobna talking about the books and the accents, answering reader‘s questions

When you start the latest book in a favourite serie and it starts with tons of references to another of your favourite books... Peter Grant meets Arthur Dent #42 :)

Impending fatherhood, a new job with a tech company, and a mysterious machine designed by Ada Lovelace. Things definitely aren‘t slowing down for Peter Grant.

I‘m not sure what it was, but something about this one didn‘t really click for me. The timeline switched around a lot in the beginning, and there seemed to be less magic than before. Or maybe I was less interested in the tech story. Still enjoyed it, & Kobna‘s skill is unmatched. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

BookmarkTavern What was really great though, was at the end of the audiobook was a fascinating joint interview with Aaronovitch and Holdbrook-Smith. 3y
KathyWheeler Maybe not having the Faceless man as an antagonist was the problem? Not sure, but I agree with your review on this. 3y
BookmarkTavern @KathyWheeler That‘s likely. The Faceless Man was such a powerful, and mostly unknown, threat. I think it would be difficult to meet that expectation of any new Big Bad. 3y

KathyWheeler @ozma.of.oz Definitely difficult, and I think False Value suffers because of it. Btw, I always listen to these books instead of reading them because Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is just so amazing. (edited) 3y
BookmarkTavern @KathyWheeler Totally agree. And Kobna definitely elevates the story. I loved the story in the little interview at the end of this book about how Aaronovitch has started dropping in very, VERY specific accents to try and trip Kobna up, because he‘s just that good. 😂 3y

Peter Grant investigates goings on at an IT start up in London.

I found the first part of this rather confusing due to the frequent flashbacks (even though the timeline is clearly marked in the chapter headings). Once I got past that, however, it was all good fun in the usual way. I'm not a great fan of criminal masterminds/supervillains, so I am a bit concerned that we are being set up for that in future books.

After I was disappointed in the last one, I liked this much better. I wonder if Aaronovitch will start a new plot arc, this felt like a standalone book. Only the IT company bit was too much and had me rolling my eyes at times (I'm a software developer; I don't know if that made it better or worse).

So good to be back in this series - another quality outing from Aaronovitch. I loved how many up to date references he managed to fit into this book - there was even a reference to Epstein 😱 I only hope that there will be more involvement from the Rivers and the fae in future books - just love that spread of vibrant characters creating other worldly complications.

Ruthiella I‘ve long been tempted by this series but not yet taken the plunge. 😬 4y
Centique @Ruthiella it‘s a lot of fun. Quite light hearted and quick to read - and an unusual take on urban fantasy, a bit more mythical than most - so I recommend trying it sometime if that sounds good to you! 4y
GingerAntics I‘ve had the very first of this series on my TBR for months now. One of these days I‘m going to have to actually open it up and read it. 4y

mrsmarch @GingerAntics I finally read the first one (which I had in my TBR stack for months) thanks to Book Spin and then I bought every paperback in the series. So, go read the first one! 4y

I mostly really enjoyed this book as an urban fantasy/ police procedural, performed by the always excellent Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. But l am feeling conflicted about reading books like this now, that have a police officer as a heroic main character (even a Black one, as is Peter Grant) and are by white authors. Even with a Black #audiobook narrator. It would be nice if the novels dealt with or even mentioned police brutality and police racism.

I adore this series! It‘s the only one I both read and listen to straight away when it comes out. (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith‘s performance is resplendent in the audiobooks!) This book was a wonderful 8th addition to the Peter Grant novel series of Rivers of London. And it was a lovely little nod of remembrance of Douglas Adams as well. 💕📚

Twainy I also love this series! 5y
GingerAntics This picture makes the book look like it‘s glowing. This series sounds really good. I‘m going to have to go look it up now. 5y
Ericalambbrown @GingerAntics It does glow! It looks wild under a black light. This series is so much fun! I got the first book with a Blind Date with a Book subscription and I was hooked! It‘s basically about a magical detective unit with the metropolitan police. But with River goddesses and other coolness. The audiobooks are amazing!! (edited) 5y
GingerAntics I think I‘m going to have to read this series sooner rather than later. That sounds awesome!!! The first book in the series fits into my monthly book budget. I also found a novella (“extra long novella” it says) that‘s part of the series, but happens in Germany. Not sure where that‘s supposed to fit into the series or if it‘s stand alone. 5y
Ericalambbrown @GingerAntics that‘s October Man! It came out between books 7 and 8. It‘s good! I‘m hoping the author does a crossover with Peter Grant from the main books and Tobias Winter (basically does the same job as Peter in Germany - main character from October Man). I hope you like the first one! 5y

That delightful moment when you realize a new book in your favorite series came out 5 days ago, and you didn‘t even know! My Tuesday just got so much better!! 😍😍

Also — if you aren‘t reading the #RiversofLondon series, you should be! They‘re magical police procedurals, where a secret branch of the Metropolitan Police Force investigates supernatural crimes in and around London, and they are a hilarious, clever, wonderful series.

Amiable Sounds intriguing! 5y

Deifio Cool I didn't know either that the next one is out! Sounds fun, changing the setting from the Met to a start-up! 5y

In this story, Peter‘s role was more about detection than wizardry. There were elements of magic used & characters who also dabbled in magic but the way Peter was going to figure out what he wanted to know was by following clues down a rabbit hole & seeing where it led. Not being able to stay at the Folly, Peter had been staying with Bev & in his moments with her he shows his excitement & nervousness about becoming a father, which is endearing!
