This year, as in other years, Lily has planned a spectacular summer in Rockaway, in her family's cozy house on stilts over the Atlantic Ocean. But by the summer of 1944, World War II has changed almost everyone's life. Lily's best friend, Margaret, and her family have moved to a wartime factory town, and worse, much worse, Lily's father is on his way overseas to the war. There's no one else Lily's age in Rockaway until Albert comes, a refugee from Hungary, a boy with a secret sewn into his coat. Albert has lost most of his family in the war; he's been through things Lily can't imagine. But when they join together to rescue and care for a kitten, they begin a special friendship. For Lily and Albert have their own secrets to share: they both have told lies, and Lily has told a lie that may cost Albert his life. From the Hardcover edition.

I read these two middle grade books for #bookedintime #ww2 . Lily's Crossing was about a girl in America who's father leaves for France. While he's away she meets a refugee from Hungary. White Bird is a graphic novel about a Jewish girl in France who spends the war hiding in the barn of some friends. Both were good! The writing style of White Bird was more appealing; the writing style of Lily's Crossing was a bit dated (1990s).

@Cuilin

Cuilin I think I read Lily‘s crossing, the cover and story are very familiar. 2 for WWII ✅🎉 1y

Two children forge a friendship as they each struggle with separation from family during #WWII. I always enjoy Patricia Reilly Giff‘s stories.

Took a walk down the most flawlessly written memory lane for the newest episode of my podcast, revisiting the middle grade historical fiction novel Lily‘s Crossing. We talk everything from grief and privilege to spam sandwiches and hot dads. Check out the link in my bio to listen! 🎧

I received this book as part of a donation and I wanted to read it before I included it in one of my Heartland Little Free Libraries. This autographed copy was one of my #twentybooksofsummer. Such a quick sweet story of wartime. Much is glossed over of course due to the suggested age of the reader but none the less I enjoyed it and I think younger children would too. Probably recommended for third through fifth or possibly sixth grade.
