One Word Kill
One Word Kill | Mark Lawrence
Ready Player One meets Stranger Things in this new novel by the bestselling author whom George RR Martin describes as "an excellent writer." In January 1986, fifteen-year-old boy-genius Nick Hayes discovers he's dying. And it isn't even the strangest thing to happen to him that week. Nick and his Dungeons & Dragons-playing friends are used to living in their imaginations. But when a new girl, Mia, joins the group and reality becomes weirder than the fantasy world they visit in their weekly games, none of them are prepared for what comes next. A strange--yet curiously familiar--man is following Nick, with abilities that just shouldn't exist. And this man bears a cryptic message: Mia's in grave danger, though she doesn't know it yet. She needs Nick's help--now. He finds himself in a race against time to unravel an impossible mystery and save the girl. And all that stands in his way is a probably terminal disease, a knife-wielding maniac and the laws of physics. Challenge accepted.

This started out very promising, but I wanted more. The ending felt abrupt. Loved the characters. It was described as Stranger Things meets Ready Player One; I can appreciate the comparison of genre.

EmberIvyRose Now I see it's part of a series, I totally didn't realize. That explains the ending. Lol! 1y

This one didn't do anything for me. It's not badly written - I just found it unengaging. I usually love time travel stories but in this instance my brain was unwilling (& probably wholly unable) to do the mental gymnastics required to grasp what was going on. I didn't connect with the characters or fully understand their motivations. The developing relationship between the 2 MCs bored me a little. Just wasn't into it, won't continue series.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 49.

I needed a break from the longer books. Wanted something quick and easy. This one fits the bill perfectly.

Takes place in the 80's, buncha kids playing D&D, some time travel...

I almost get a Paper Girls vibe from it crossed with Stephen King writing one of his young adult stories.

Anyways - read it front to back tonight & enjoyed it enough to want to carry on with the 2nd book. 👍

Soubhiville I thought this was fun, too! 5y

The tag line for this book is "Ready Player One meets Stranger Things..." I disagree completely. This book had nothing in common with Ready Player One and the only similarity with Stranger Things was that it's set in the 1980s with a group of kids that play D&D. This is clearly a marketing ploy and shame on them, because the story was rather bland and didn't really pick up until the last 30 pages. It's worth a read if you enjoy time travel tho.

Entertaining quick read. Set in 1986, featuring a small group of teenagers and a time travelling character. Stephen King vibe in the way the kids are written. Interested in finding out where the story goes in the rest of the series.

Pitched to me as Ready Player One meets Stranger Things so of course I had to check it out. I easily fell into this story of time travel, mystery, & all things 80s and was quite sad when I finished it. I will be picking up book 2 as soon as possible. I need to know if Nick changed his future.

JaclynW That's a good way to describe a book! I'm sold! Stacked! 5y

I know what I am picking up after a finish my current read. Since Limited Wish came out today it is time for a Mark Lawrence binge. I need to finish the Book of the Ancestor trilogy (I have been avoiding Holy Sister because I don't want it to end) & then pick up the 1st & 2nd in his new trilogy.

This was fun! I like kid adventures with an 80‘s setting. The time travel could have been offsetting, but it worked for me here. I liked the characters. A fun, quick read.

Jee_HookedOnBookz Is this part of a series, Soubhi? 6y
Soubhiville @Jee_HookedOnBookz I didn‘t know it when I got it, but yes apparently it is. It‘s not a cliffhanger though. I might read the others, I did like this one! 6y

A little reading and tea before cooking and decorating for the second grad party in two days. Full disclosure- I‘ve never watched Dr Who, this is my nephew‘s mug.

I‘m enjoying this kindle first book! It was blurbed as Stranger Things meets Ready Player One... it hasn‘t been that exciting yet, but I am enjoying it. The kids in it are great!
