¡Por fin! Yo terminé este libro desdes unos meses y me encanta! 🥰😍 In addition to the poems, there's also a very informative intro, and some of Lorca's letters to his family from the time he wrote the poems, so it's like reading 3 books in one! Despite this being a bilingual edition, I still found myself looking up several words on each page that didn't quite 'match' the translation, and made lots of notes and learned a lot of new vocabulary.

wanderinglynn I love his poetry. 💜 This book is on my TBR. 3y

This bilingual edition of Federico Lorca's poem collection Poet in New York was intriguing. The poems feel abstract in English, but in Spanish it feels like a stream of consciousness in regards to the various known spots in New York. The letters showed another side of Lorca, and it did show more of his emotions about his time in New York and about his family. #lmpbc #lgbtq #poetry #round12 @WanderingBookaneer @SamAnne @TheBookKeepers

TheBookKeepers Were the printed with both Spanish and English translations? 3y
phantomx Yes, the poems were originally written in Spanish (left page) and translated in English (right page). 3y
phantomx All the poems in English will always be on the right pages. The lectures and letters will only be all in English 3y

Sending my LMPBC book today! I've been slammed with so much work during the month, but I read the entire collection. @WanderingBookaneer gave me the idea to use a journal to write down my thoughts on the book, kinda like writing letters or a diary entry. I'll let ya'll know when I've sent out my package @TheBookKeepers @SamAnne @suvata #LMPBC #Group U

TheBookKeepers Yay! It‘s been a crazy month for me too, I plan to have mine finished and mailed by the weekend but will keep you all posted ❤️ 3y
SamAnne Postcolonial Love Poem is fantastic. Will finish this weekend and send it off on Monday. I have so many thoughts that I will include large post-it notes in the back for particular poems! 😂 3y
phantomx @TheBookKeepers Sent out my package, it should arrive to you by August 5 3y

“When you look more closely at the mechanism of social life and the painful slavery of both men and machines, you see that it is nothing but a kind of typical empty anguish that makes even crime and gangs forgivable means of escape.”

Lorca wasn't, I think, excusing criminality, but empathising with how social inequality he witnessed creates an environment in which criminality becomes a means of survival.

I enjoyed what I understood & what I didn't was evocative in a gnomic way. As Lorca was a surrealist there's a good chance I wasn't meant to understand everything, which gives me some consolation. I did enjoy the letters home, which gave an insight his family relations. Footnotes showing lapses of memory & occasional exaggerations & untruths were interesting. I'm not sure that I'll seek out more of Lorca's poetry but I will revisit this collection

Stepping outside my reading comfort zone with this bilingual edition of Poeta en Nueva York - it's a good chance to practice my Spanish and it checks off the "poetry in translation on a theme other than love" box for the #readharder challenge! ??

vivastory I love Lorca. One of the greatest poets 7y
danimgill @vivastory I can't believe I've never read him before! I'm loving it so far (edited) 7y

Don't ask me any questions. I've seen how things that seek their way find their void instead.
