7 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
Read Keri Smith's posts on the Penguin Blog A curious, engaging, and creative rethinking of what a book can be, from the creator of "Wreck this Journal." In this uniquely skewed look at the purpose and function of "a book," Keri Smith offers an illustrated guide that asks readers to creatively examine all the different ways This Is Not a Book can be used. With intriguing prompts, readers will discover that the book can be: A secret message--"tear out a page, write a note on it for a stranger, and leave it in a public place." A recording device--"have everyone you contact today write their name in the book." An instrument--"create as many sounds as you can using the book, like flipping the pages fast or slapping the cover." "This Is Not a Book" will engage readers by having them define everything a book can be by asking, "If it's not a book, what is it then?"--with a kaleidoscope of possible answers.

I can feel a slump coming so I need some book suggestions. I would prefer a book that's not super long or in a series ( some exceptions if you really loved it ) #booksuggestions

KirstieE Stephanie Perkins Anna and the French kiss trilogy ! Their very quick romance novels that are amazing ☺️ 8y

GARBLED OPENING LINES: "I can't see!" "Come to me." "Follow my voice."
I stayed on the edge of my seat. The 1920s-style singing, bull-dozers in the background, the sound of a needle on a 78 rpm recording. (Ask your grandparents.) But the opening cries of the sisters in the fire will grab you and not let go. An interview session with the cast and crew sounds like a podcast and is the crowning touch. Surprise by Robin Miles. Bravo! #audiofile

Bklover I definitely know what a 78 recording is. Glad there is someone else here who does too! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Since "In the Embers" is not actually not a book, therefore not in the @Litsy database, here are a couple of links:

Pickpick

"In the Embers"
I found an audio production that I wish I could read. It opens with a garbled recording of voices of frantic victims in a 1920's barn fire on the fictional Tulle Hill Plantation in Maryland. What's really gripping is that the recording is etched into a charred wooden beam that's been unearthed by an archeologist; and is being played back 85 years later by laser. The archaeologist assembles a team to learn more about the victims.

Donna_sBookMinute REVIEW (Cont'd).
The sound of the voices reminds me of a movie that depicts aliens communicating with one another. Robin Miles plays one of the fire victims; and she does not disappoint. And she sings. Thank you, @BellaBookNook for recommending #audiofile to me. I wouldn't have found this without it. As far as I can tell, there is no print copy. I wish there were. I may even attempt to transcribe it. It's that good.

BellaBookNook Yeah!!! This one sounds amazing. Might have to check it out myself. I wonder why no print version. I am so happy you have sound some good recs at. Audiofile! Happy listening!! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute ?? @LauraBrook -- Did you really intend to add "This is Not a Book" to your stack? It actually does seem to offer useful information. Just wanted to make sure you weren't intending to add, "In the Embers." ? 8y

Donna_sBookMinute 👉🏽 @BellaBookNook -- 👍🏽 I guess their only focus is producing audio. Let me know if you check it out. 8y
LauraBrook @Donna_sBookMinute Shoot, you're right! I did mean to add In the Embers. Thanks for catching this! 😁 8y
Donna_sBookMinute ?? @LauraBrook -- ? If you want to listen to "In the Embers," it's available on Audible. But I checked it out on Hoopla.
