Another book i finished at the weekend was this twisty thriller set in a minor Yorkshire private school alternating between 1981 + 2005. Latin teacher mr straitly lives for the school, haunted by events concerning a former colleague the appearance of an old boy as a super head causes ripples as old grievances, and crimes raise their head. I loved this and do like bks set in schhols which can be pressure cookers. Definitely recommend.

An enjoyable but dark and sometimes humorous story set in a boys‘ school in North Yorkshire.

A decent sequel to Gentleman & Players, though I liked G & P a little bit better. Still, I was happy to go back to St. Oswald‘s and Roy Straitley. Wanting to know what secrets would be revealed kept me turning the pages. I hope she writes more in this series.

I can‘t remember the last time I spent the entire day just reading.

Looking forward to this #TBRsomeday but I keep thinking that's Tobey McGuire (spelling??) sulking on the cover!

"A masterpiece of misdirection" indeed. Wow, I loved this and the last third completely caught me out. Would be a perfect read on a foggy afternoon with a glass of red.

I read and loved lots of Joanne Harris' books some years ago but then I kind of forgot about her and haven't read anything new of hers for ages. I'm really looking forward to this. Her writing always feels comforting yet there's often an undercurrent of magic and superstition, the"forking of the fingers to divert the path of malchance..." Also, she often writes about food ?

Breaking out of my norm for something meant to boost my number since Goodreads told me Im two books behind to make my goal. A good, fast paced thriller usually busts my plateau and was totally what brought about my Harlan Corban binge last year. And once again, Baby Girl's piano lesson is my stolen 30 minutes.

Really enjoyed this book. Lots of twists & turns!

Fifth book of 2017

This one was a bit slow to start, but I enjoyed seeing how the mystery unraveled. Bad memories are stirred up when a former student becomes head of St. Oswald's, and an old Master sets out to find a truth from many years ago. Deceit! Intrigue! I'd like to read the other Malbry books by Harris now that I know there are more! #LitsyAtoZ #LetterD

Choosing St Oswald's over Geordie Shore today. Can't think of a higher praise. #hooked

I got everything wrong! All the surnames and the narrator personal sympathy made me point to the wrong person 🙀 I just love when a book trick me under my nose, it means it completely got me caught in to it and I missed details as pronouns and physical descriptions. Also, the more I read the more I hope in a happy ending but I am afraid this book is too realistic to have one.

I keep forgetting that the story is told by a professor in 2005. I know is more that 10 years ago now but still seems like a complete different age by the nostalgic way he speaks of Saint Oswald.
Also, I was wondering why I dislike Harrington so much, at this point of the story he is actually a good young boy, maybe a bit cheeky but nothing more. Is just the professor's ideas that influences me so much!

I really enjoyed this! A clever psychological thriller, beautiful writing and totally absorbing. I was not aware this was to follow her Gentlemen & Players and Blue-eyed Boy, but it can be read as a standalone, as only reference is the school and certain characters. Such a versatile writer, so different from Chocolat. Two thumbs up from me! 👍🏼👍🏼

This first page of the prologue already got me hooked. I am guessing this will be unputdownable. Anyone read this?
