This book was not what I expected it to be..
It was ok but it is young middle grade, written to be like older middle grade/YA 🤔
I may read the 2nd one but not anytime soon.

3.75/5

Went to book club tonight for The Strangers and grabbed the book for next month too.
I had higher hopes for the strangers but I didn‘t super like it. Probably won‘t be continuing with the series.

This SF novel written by Margaret Peterson Haddix would be good for a LC. I think the students would be engaged because of the mystery of the book. The book is about siblings who are missing their mother and discover another dimension in hopes to find her. The UDL principle I would select would be highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships (3.2) due to the close relationship between the siblings. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox I would select ESOL Strategy 9- Teach note-taking strategies: T-lists, time lines etc.- I think it would be beneficial for the student to take notes throughout the book to be able to review once they are finished.

A really big thumbs up and 5 stars from the kids. Every chapter was a cliff hanger that elicited cries of “keep going!” 😄

Needless to say, the next installment has been preordered.

Not just for me - I‘m hoping it is a fun read aloud. Three children kidnapped, eerily similar to the Greystone siblings. Adventures ensue......

(Author: Margaret Peterson Haddix)

This SF would be a great LC novel for students to read. It switches between multiple POVs which allows for multiple character analyses, has an ongoing mystery that students can try to unravel alongside the main characters, and demonstrates the strong bond between family members.

kgarzon https://haddixbooks.com/book/the-strangers/ The author has a discussion guide which includes questions about structure and narrative POVs, character strengths, foreshadowing, etc. It even has fun activities about deciphering codes and planning a protest. 5y
kgarzon UDL Principle 9.1: Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation (assigning specific roles in LCs)

EL Strategy 48: Use group assignments, portfolios, learning journals and non-print options as alternative assessment.

DrSpalding You could include your author study as a resource as well but as you know, the best resources come from the author themselves and publisher. I am adding this to my stack. I want to read this book. 5y

I went into this expecting a thriller and I sort of got it! Yet another fabulous example of “don‘t let expectations rule your reading life”. Seriously. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. The Strangers was a fun and daring adventure. I loved seeing siblings who love each other and protect one another. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

annahenke I have such fond memories of outsiders. I should read more by this author. 5y

This very much reminded me of The Mysterious Benedict Society although it has a much faster pace & is much more tightly edited. Full of twists & turns, unexplained coincides, mystery & mayhem, codes, riddles, secrets, hidden passages & more, this book is a nonstop adventure that young readers (middle grade specifically) will surely devour. It‘s also the first in a series so there is more to come. Definitely a good addition to the library.

This book! Comes out on 4/19
The Greystone kids have just learned there is a family nearly identical to them - sharing names and birthdays. Now mom is missing and they a tracking the clues...

Mystery. Alternate universe. Family.

Only downside... I have to wait for book two.
