A Ghost in the Machine
A Ghost in the Machine: A Chief Inspector Barnaby Novel | Caroline Graham
6 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
When a bloody, pulverized body is found lying beneath the rustic timbers of an authentic torture device so vicious and complicated as to be blood-curdling, there's sufficient unrest in tiny Forbes Abbot to call in Chief Inspector Barnaby. Was Dennis Brinkley done in by crooked business partners, a teenage seductress, a couple of would-be publishers who've just inherited--and then lost--millions, or perhaps by tired, timid little Benny Fraye, who wouldn't hurt a fly--would she? Barnaby will soon find out just who set in motion the gruesome machine that crushed the unfortunate victim. Caroline Graham's delightful cozy village mysteries, which inspired the continuing Midsommer Murders series starring Inspector Barnaby on A&E Television, have long been fan-favorites; A Ghost in the Machine is sure to cement her reputation as one of the best crime writers in the mystery business today.

This final in the Midsomer Murders series is the longest and the most slow burning, character developing novel. When a death occurs, it looks like a simple accident. And yet…

I‘m so glad I found this series on audio! #BBRC #YeahBaby #ADevilInTheDetails

LibrarianRyan Is that the same Midsomer murders they made the show of? 1y
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan Yes! The show is a bit different from the books, and obviously not every show is based on the books (isn‘t there over 100 episodes now???). I loved exploring the origins to the show. 1y

Really enjoying this book.I have seen some of the Midsomer Murders, but not every season, & not this book.John Nettles writes the Foreword to my edition. In it he discusses how for a myriad of reasons,TV has to quickly tell the story, so inevitably characters & plot can come across differently. Most importantly, Nettles writes, characters are more fleshed out in the written form.I am thoroughly in agreement and love all the quirky characters.

TheBookHippie I love a good quirky character ! 4y

Barnaby's investigations only really get started just over half way through, and so most of the book is spent following the various characters before, during, and after the investigation rather than the investigation itself. Having said that, it was an intriguing mystery albeit with some characters left at loose ends the reader may wish to finish off for themself.

"It proved as grateful as a cat could be - which admittedly isn‘t saying a lot - purring extensively and sitting on her lap whenever she wanted to work at her tapestry or read the papers." - A Ghost In The Machine by Caroline Graham.
