Snow White Learns Witchcraft
Snow White Learns Witchcraft: Stories and Poems | Theodora Goss
11 posts | 10 read | 13 to read
In SNOW WHITE LEARNS WITCHCRAFT, World Fantasy Award winner Theodora Goss retells and and recasts fairy tales by Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Oscar Wilde. In these stories and poems, sometimes harrowing, sometimes hilarious, always lyrical, Goss re-centers and empowers the women at the hearts of these timeless narratives, much as her acclaimed novel series, THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF THE ATHENA CLUB, does for the classics of Victorian supernatural literature. With cover art by Ruth Sanderson and an introduction by Jane Yolen.

At first, I felt ambivalent about this book. It took me a while to get on the right wavelength, if that makes any sense. But I kept listening and began to really appreciate the author‘s narrative. I enjoyed some parts of it more than others, but I just kept listening. There was nothing dull about this book, so I felt no need at all to bail. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes their fairy tales turned on their heads.

Theodora Goss retells a variety of fairy tales in this collection of short stories and poems. From Snow White to Goldilocks to The Nightingale and the Rose, Goss shows depth and charm in these pieces.

Love Goss‘s skill and style, but I prefer her prose to her poetry. Every poem felt too short for me. But I loved the variety of tales offered here, the different POVs. Especially enjoyed Conversations With a Sea Witch. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

⭐️⭐️ I was not impressed by this collection of short stories and poems. I was left wanting after each piece. The only story I liked was Red as Blood and White as Bone which I think you can find on its own without having to buy this whole collection. This one just wasn‘t for me. This was my #bookspinbingo No. 23 pick.

TheAromaofBooks At least it's off the list!! 4y

Oh, how I loved this book! It has earned a well-deserved place on my shelf next to Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber. Very different, but just as perfect.

#pricedrop! Couldn't resist!

esurient I read a couple of her stories before, and "Red as Blood and White as Bone" was AMAZING. https://www.tor.com/2016/05/04/red-as-blood-and-white-as-bone 5y

I adored this collection! I loved how Goss made a conscious effort to centre women in a genre that has become the purview of women and girls. I especially liked the adaptations of Hans Christen Anderson stories!

Hm. There were few poems I liked, some of the short stories where quite fun too. And some I had read before. All the right ingredients were there. But I kept waiting for the punch, the bite, and it never really came. Sort of a let down, but not a total bust. ⭐⭐⭐

I've been eagerly anticipating this, Theodora Goss is an interesting writer and this is her new collection of poems and short stories. I loved her Red as Blood and White as Bone short story, and even though some of her other stuff haven't been as good, I have really high hopes for this one.
