I really struggled with reviewing this book. I think it‘s important. I think Mailer has a deep talent for writing. I just slogged through some of this while also being completely engrossed in other parts. So it‘s a so-so, for me. This was my April #BookSpin The-Most-Popular-Book-the-Year-You-Were-Born (1949).

The book has been hailed as the best book from WWII. I don‘t get it. Was pretty good for the first 600 pages, but… the ending left me disappointed. After writing for 600+ pages Mailer didn‘t conclude his book so much as he stopped writing. The deus ex machina end to the patrol was right out of a high school writing assignment. I expected so much more from this book. It was for me the literary equivalent of overwrought empty calories.

Working on an episode about friendship amongst authors (or friendships that went sour/enemies who became friendly) There's Vidal/Mailer and Hemmingway/Fitzgerald and Hawthorne/Melville... Anyone got any other examples?

Ruthiella Not sure if this counts, but Richard Ford was so angry with a review of his book that Colson Whitehead wrote, that he spit on him in public. Now I‘m no longer interested in reading any Richard Ford books. Also, didn‘t Gore Vidal feuded with everyone...? 3y

Therewillbebooks @wanderinglynn Those are perfect. The Pratchett Gaiman friendship lead to one of the funniest collaborations I've ever read. 3y
Therewillbebooks @Ruthiella That definitely counts! I will be researching that altercation 😄
and yes, Vidal did feud with plenty of people, though he and Mailer got along in their later years.

vivastory @Ruthiella Speaking of Richard Ford reminded me of him shooting & mailing a Hoffman book to her after she gave one of his a bad review. I wasn't aware until just now that she has also reacted very poorly to negative reviews, although not nearly as bad as Ford!

This is one of the best reads of my life. The pace of the story and the amazing characters have been with me for twenty years. Maybe a little longer, but who‘s counting.

Current read has this list of “important books” on the back, and the only one I‘ve ever heard of before is the tagged book. Any opinions out there about the rest of them?

DivineDiana Love lists of “books to read” but alas, I have not read any of these! 7y

Finished this as it was falling apart. Not sure what to think about this book - I didn't dislike it, but I have no intention of reading it again.

Finally! It's taken me a while but I'm starting to care about what's going to happen further in the book.

HannaPolkadots @maich I do, but mostly crosscountry skiing, where we tend to win. I don't know much about our ski jumping team, though ⛷😀 7y
maich @HannaPolkadots I watch it every winter. And I know that the Norway team is the best. ❤They always win competition in our contry. ☺ Our boys are also good. Not like team but separate. 👍 7y

Long and boring and occasionally enlightening. I'd recommend watching The Pacific instead.
