So...the comparison to X-Men is spot on...like if the X-Men were to enter an MMA fighting contest to see who was left in the end. I wasn't entirely into this...but that was probably all me. When you listen to about a book a day, sometimes certain books fall through the cracks. Looking back on it, I still think it was a solid story and if she never writes the second book in the series; I can say that this ended in a way that gives perfect closure.

I enjoyed Katharyn Blair‘s debut a lot. Vesper felt like a great protagonist, and her progression as a fighter and as a person felt well-handled to me. There were a couple plot points that bothered me. Among them was a message left on Sam‘s wall to him that only an oddity could read, and he‘s not an oddity. This is a series, so hopefully that will get explained in a later book. I‘d give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2. #UrbanFantasy #YA #KatharynBlair

I‘ve been struggling with a book hangover after finishing Wilder Girls, and I think I‘ve finally found the cure in Katharyn Blair‘s The Beckoning Shadow. Had this on my shelf for a while, and last night, it finally forced its way into my hands. Got up to chapter four last night, and I‘m digging it so far. 👍

Book Haul!❤️❤️❤️

While this book doesn‘t bring anything completely new to the table, I liked it all the same. It was a little slow to start in getting interesting but by the time Vesper comes across the Tournament of the Unraveling things kick up a notch. The book turns to the tournament and the Oddities (those with powers) and an underlying second story takes form. Clever friendships are begrudgingly created, romance grows and I forward to book 2.

If I wasn't paying attention I might think this was a sequel to Poet X, but that is an entirely different author. However i bet they have the same cover designer. I love this cover. The purples, smoke, and dirty red. Evocative.

This books gets 5 out of 5 stars! I really didnt know what to expect going in, I just knew I loved the gorgeous cover, but it blew me away! I loved the character growth Vesper, our main gal, goes through and the internal struggle she fought with throughout the whole book. It was done wonderfully and I connected instantly with Vesper.
