I enjoyed this short classic for the sense of place and the way the writing beautifully captures the ambivalence of the teen protagonist. I can imagine the relaxed attitude to sex in here was extremely controversial at the time whereas now it doesnt seem shocking. Ground breaking at the time, now its an interestingly dark little read.

Clare-Dragonfly Wow, what are these flowers? They remind me of magnolias but are definitely not the same as I see in the spring. It‘s so fun to see pictures of plants from different parts of the world! 4mo
CarolynM I read it as a teenager, so a long time ago 😆 I‘m not sure it was shocking then, but still pretty daring 4mo
squirrelbrain I read this when doing A-level French, so over 30 years ago and I was a naive teenager so it was rather😳. I‘ve read it a few times since, and own several copies for some reason! 4mo
Centique @Clare-Dragonfly it is a type of magnolia so good guessing! Its not mine, but i looked up what magnolias we have here in NZ and it looks like this is a hybrid created here and called Black Tulip Magnolia. 4mo

In the past the idea of sadness always appealed to me, now i am almost ashamed of its complete egoism.
