Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire
Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire: A Novel | Margot Berwin
5 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
Lila Nova is a thirty-two year-old advertising copyrighter who lives alone in a plain, white box of an apartment. Recovering from a heartbreaking divorce, Lilas mantra is simple: no pets, no plants, no people, no problems. But when Lila meets David Exley, a ruggedly handsome plant-seller, her lonely life blossoms into something far more colorful. From the cold, harsh streets of Manhattan to the verdant jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula, Hothouse Flower is the story of a woman who must travel beyond the boundaries of sense and comfort to find what she truly wants. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I really enjoyed escaping to the Yucatán Peninsula during a stressful week with this fun & adventurous story about plants. Although I had a few issues with the story, I would still recommend it to plant lovers. It convinced me that an orchid is easy to take care of so I bought this one. Wish me luck!

TheRiehlDeal That's good to know that orchids are easy to care for. Because whenever a plant or flowers come into my house, it dies. Or one of my two cats eats it. 4y

I throughly enjoyed this quirky contemporary fairy tale. Lila faces challenges, tasks to complete, temptation, mistakes, and adventures on her quest. Great story if you can roll with its oddities: Lila is not particularly likable, the dialogue and story arcs can be a bit cheesily new age-ish, and the author plays fast and loose with (possibly stereotypical?) concepts of Mexican spiritual realism.

Obviously I'm a plant person. This book was in the free library at local coffee shop, I excitedly took it home. Weird but I was intrigued by plant lore. Then let's just say if you are animal lover you will be appalled. Skimmed last few Chapters. Unlikeable main character got even more unlikable, crazy people crazier, and then there's a even weirder ending. If it wasn't for the plant portion of the book it would have been a total waste of time.

DivineDiana Fabulous plants!!! 6y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @DivineDiana Thank you! I try to make them happy. 6y

Freespirit What a lovely space😍 6y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Freespirit It's my happy place. Always a bit bittersweet in Spring when all the plants move to deck and it's just got few cactus left inside. 6y

I really enjoyed this book. The language of flowers was beautiful and the author turned flowers into embodiment of human desire. I listened as an audiobook and hearing the words made it even lovelier.
