Russia: A 1,000 Year Chronicle of the Wild East | Martin Sixsmith
4 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
Combining in-depth research with his personal experiences as the BBC Moscow correspondent for almost twenty years, Sixsmith tells Russia's full and fascinating story, from its foundation in the last years of the tenth century to the first years of the twenty-first, skillfully tracing the conundrums of modern Russia to their roots in its troubled past. Covering politics, music, literature and art, he explores the myths Russians have created from their history. Marking the twentieth anniversary of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the complex political landscape of Russia and its unique place in the modern world.

Day 18 - #Russia #LetsTravelJuly

These are my favorite books that I have enjoyed that are set in Russia and written by Russian authors.

Reading about the events leading up to the dissolution of the USSR is fascinating. This whole book has been an eye-opener, but the recent history even more so, as I was just a kid when this stuff was happening. #nonfictionlove

I'm also counting this as my #death entry, as the number of deaths during the Soviet era is literally incomprehensible to me.

This probably shouldn't amuse me as much as it does. The author's writing style is much more informal than what I'm used to in non-fiction, but I'm enjoying the change. #amreading

Continuing with my Russia theme, I'm starting this tonight. Thanks for the #recommendation @Tnovo !

Tnovo I hope you enjoy it. I thought it highlighted the struggles of the working class, the revolutions, the ever changing politics and the whole oligarch takeover, and then all the Putin history. It is a lot to digest. 👍 (edited) 8y
