The Big Kahuna | Janet Evanovich, Peter Evanovich

A stoner, an Instagram model, a Czech oligarch, and a missing unicorn. Nick Fox and Kate O'Hare have their work cut out for them in their weirdest, wildest adventure yet in this latest entry in the New York Times bestselling series by Janet and Peter Evanovich. Straight arrow FBI Agent Kate O'Hare always plays by the rules. Charming Con Man Nicholas Fox makes them up as he goes along. She thinks he's nothing but a scoundrel. He thinks she just needs to lighten up. They're working together to tackle the out-of-bounds cases ordinary FBI agents can't touch. And, their relationship? Well, there hasn't been so much explosive chemistry since Nitro was introduced to Glycerin. Next on the docket: The mysterious disappearance of the Silicon Valley billionaire, known as the Big Kahuna. Kate's been assigned to find him but no one seems particularly keen on helping. His twenty-six year old adult actress wife-turned Instagram model wife and his shady Czech business partner are more interested in gaining control of his company. For that they need a dead body not a living Kahuna. The only lead they have is the Kahuna's drop-out son, who's living the dream in Hawaii - if your dream is starting your day with the perfect wave and ending it with a big bowl of weed. To get close to the Kahuna's son, Kate and Nick go undercover as a married couple in the big wave, bohemian, surfer community of Paia, Maui. Living a laid back, hippy-dippy lifestyle isn't exactly in Kate's wheelhouse, but the only thing more horrifying is setting up house with Nick Fox, even if he does look pretty gnarly on a longboard. If they don't catch a break soon, waves aren't the only thing she's going to be shredding (or bedding).

116/150 When books have co-authors, I'm always curious who contributes what. Lee Goldberg, co-author of the first 5 books in the Fox & O'Hare series, must have been in charge of snappy dialogue, clever innuendo, and sexual tension. This book, written without Goldberg, is missing all of these things. What happened to Nick & Kate's relationship? They've been on five assignments together, he's saved her life, she's saved his life, and they've ⬇️

RamsFan1963 been very intimate together, but now it's like we're back to book 1 again. Kate is the uptight FBI agent who treats Nick like a criminal who can't be trusted. I also didn't like the change in format. The previous 5 books were set up as heist/scam/stings set up to capture criminals that the regular FBI couldn't touch. Here its just straight forward kidnapping case, no intricate plot, no disguises, no scam that required split second timing. 18h
RamsFan1963 It was pretty much a bummer. I have the last book in the series, The Bounty, that I originally planned to read next, but this was so bad I think I'll wait to finish in 2025. 2 ⭐⭐ 18h
Mollyanna This is disappointing to hear. I‘ve read the first four and love the Nick/Kate relationship and the cons (especially when Willie is part of the plan 😂). I may hold off on book 5 for a bit to savor it. 10h

This story was humorous and there were many zany moments that had me chuckling. Unfortunately, the humor was not typical for what this series is known for and it didn‘t mesh well with the characters. The personalities of the characters were not the same. Kate and Nick‘s relationship felt like it had regressed a lot & for no specified reason. Lastly, and utterly the most disappointed aspect was: where was the con?? I missed that. I missed it all!

EmG Only halfway thru and relationship wise it's like the previous two books didn't happen. Not loving Cosmo so far. 4y
AmyReadsAlot @EmG exactly! I was disappointed with pretty much everyone. Cosmo 🙄. I am willing to try the next book but if it‘s anything like this one, I will have to walk from the series. Lol, I hope it gets better for you though 🙃 4y
RamsFan1963 @AmyReadsAlot I didnt read your review until after I'd written mine, 5 years apart, but its amusing because we had the exact same reaction. 17h

Oh...Janet. I feel like you're slipping into old writing behavior patterns. No. 6 in the Fox & O'Hare series, this lighter adventure thriller doesn't do too much of the thrilling nor does it advance the characters either. I enjoyed the Hawaiian setting but it was a bit predictable. If you enjoyed the TV show White Collar then you may enjoy this series as too. Good enough to continue on but here's hoping Evanovich picks up her game next time.

Janet Evanovich is a go-to author for me for lighter reads. I really like this series, pairing FBI agent Kate and con man Nick. Here they are looking for a missing billionaire. As usual, there are multiple stops around the world and much hilarity. A fun, quick read.

Quick & entertaining. Typical Evanovich fare except her son finally gets writing credit after ghost writing for who knows how long. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A fun and fast read. This one takes place in Hawaii, New Zealand, and Prague while Kate and Nick search for a missing CEO and valuable data. Plus, there's a guy who thinks he's a wizard a la Harry Potter 😆

I enjoyed the support of our group. After a rough start on Day 1, I hit my fitness goals for the week.

During my walks and time on the stationary bike I enjoyed audiobooks. I finished 3 books this week.

We‘ve ALL got this!
