#Classicmysteries

I have been researching/reading some of the classic American mysteries. Carolyn Wells was a librarian, writer,& poet. She began writing mysteries after listening to one of Anna K. Green‘s mystery novels read aloud. (I have read The Leavenworth Case by her). Puzzles always intrigued her-she enjoyed creating them in her mysteries. Both The Clue(1909) & Murder in the Bookshop feature a locked room & a locked house mystery.⬇️

kspenmoll The clever & erudite private detective Fleming Stone is invited during the last 10 pages of The Clue & solves the whodunit in 24 hours. In Murder in the Bookshop (1936) Stone takes over the case by page 37. Set in NYC both books reflect the culture, architecture, geography, of their times. The world of rare books is explored in Murder in the Bookshop. 3y

A good old fashioned Whodunnit: 1930s New York, Philip Balfour is murdered and a rare book is stolen; the suspects are his son, his aide, his young wife and two fellow collectors. Our PI, Fleming Stone, must follow the clues, through further murders, kidnap and ransom before an innocent man is arrested and bring the killer to justice. #JoyousJanuary
