Lager Queen of Minnesota
Lager Queen of Minnesota | J Ryan Stradal
A novel of family, Midwestern values, hard work, fate and the secrets of making a world-class beer, from the bestselling author of Kitchens of the Great Midwest Edith Magnusson's rhubarb pies are famous in the Twin Cities--they were named the third-best in the state of Minnesota and St. Anthony-Waterside Nursing Home has quickly becomes the hottest dinner ticket in town. Still, she lays awake wondering how her life might have been different if her father hadn't left their family farm to her sister Helen, a decision that split their family in two. With the proceeds from the farm, her sister, Helen Blotz, built her husband Orval's family soda business into the top selling brewery in Minnesota. She singlehandedly created the light beer revolution and made their corporate motto ubiquitous: "Drink lots, it's Blotz." But Helen dismisses IPAs as a fad, and the Blotz fortune begins its inevitable decline. Soon, though, she finds a potential savior that's surprisingly close to home. . . Diana Winter earns a shot at learning the beer business from the ground up just as the IPA revolution begins. The stakes couldn't be higher: just as she's launching her own brewpub, she's due to deliver a baby girl. When the unthinkable happens, it's up to Grandma Edith--and a delightfully surprising cadre of grandmother friends--to secure the next generation's chances for a better future. Can Grandma Edith's Rhubarb Pie In A Bottle Ale save Diana's fledgling brewery, and change their hearts and fortunes forever? The Lager Queen of Minnesota serves up a cast of lovable, quintessentially Midwestern characters eager to make their mark in a world that's often stacked against them. In this deeply affecting, humorous, emotional family saga, resolution can take generations, but when it finally comes, we're surprised, moved, and delighted.

This was a sweet uplifting book. I was craving a beer and a slice of pie when I read it and I don‘t even like the taste of beer! If you‘ve ever wondered about the process for turning hops and yeast and grain into beer, this will give you a primer. But the information wasn‘t overwhelming, and added to the enjoyment of the book.

Aims42 Perfect review 👍🏻 I enjoyed this book a lot too, and had the pie and beer cravings too 😆🍺🥧 4y

I loved this book! I‘ll definitely check out his prior book 👍🏻 🌟🌟🌟🌟/5

britt_brooke I really enjoyed this one, too! 4y
Aims42 @britt_brooke I didn‘t know much going in, but it exceeded any expectations I had 👍🏻 Only thing that kinda bugged me was how Diana was like, “in order for me to get into college, I need to make a beer”. Where did that come from??? How about a scholarship? But I still loved this book despite that one thing 4y
britt_brooke @Aims42 I didn‘t know much about the story, but I know a decent amount about beer. 😂 Even though it took place in MN, it reminded me of the years I lived in WI. You‘re totally right about that part, lol. There are many, many other ways. 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Ah, this is the book you mentioned. 👍 4y

I feel like I‘m cheating by not drinking a beer while reading this book 😳 If I‘d been reading this in the summer that‘s exactly what I‘d pair it with. And pie. I have never wanted pie as much as I do while reading this 🤤 🥧 🍺 It‘s a great book so far, I blew through 150 pages without realizing it 😆

Prairiegirl_reading This book sparked an interest in craft beer for me for sure!! I already loved pie!! Haha! 4y
Aims42 @Prairiegirl_reading I can definitely see how it would spark your interest, it‘s fascinating! I‘m with ya on pie, I didn‘t need a book to spark my interest in that 😂 4y
Prairiegirl_reading @Aims42 I honestly was listening to the audiobook, drove to the liquor store and ended up buying way more than I intended! 🤣🤣🤣I regularly only drink wine! 4y
Aims42 @Prairiegirl_reading LOL 😂 That sums up every time I visit a liquor store, I stock up and look at the receipt and think, “Whoops! Well, it won‘t go to waste” 😆 4y

A family drama, pie, and beer...and it takes place in Minnesota. I love that it‘s a sprawling intergenerational story of small-town Midwestern lives and the strong women who each possess a unique brand of persistence and perseverance. Also...best chapter titles ever: $20,000...$92.27
If you love novels, honest midwestern values, and food memoirs, this one is a great selection

Nope. The library loan is about to be up and I‘ve tried but I just can‘t. Not even to tick Minnesota off my 50 states challenge. If anyone has some recommendations for Minnesota books, that are more romance or cozy crime, then send them my way.

This book caught me off guard with how much I loved it! Reminded me of Fried Green Tomatoes as far as family relationships and setting. Really charming and filled with a variety of strong, smart, female characters.

A story of betrayal born of sibling rivalry and what happens after. I am an erstwhile beer snob and sometimes want to brew beer, but I no longer drink alcohol or consume gluten. Is a beer without alcohol or gluten even beer? (Sounds like a koan.) I was somewhat disappointed that the author is a man and all of the voices in the novel are women---male authors have been speaking for women for centuries--- but Stradal does a decent job of it.

Jenken1998 Getting to this today. 5y
ImperfectCJ @Jenken1998 I'll have to watch for your review. After sleeping on it, a couple of little things have begun to annoy me about the book, but overall I still enjoyed it. 5y

I went to an author event for the tagged book. It was a lot of fun and just as interesting and nice as he was when I saw him on tour for the last book. If you have a chance to see him please do! I got my book signed and he signed his previous book for my sister.

I really liked this book. It took a bit longer to get into than his first one (kitchens of the Great Midwest) but it had that same warm expansive tone that I enjoyed.

The ending was a bit unexpected and I love how it‘s written non-chronologically with different characters perspective.

A fun, sweet book about family and forgiveness. Two sisters each inherit the family farm after the death of their father with one getting the bulk of the estate. While one is ambitious and business savvy, the other chooses a low key lifestyle leading to a rift that remains for decades. As the more successful sibling gets into the brewery business, the other struggles with a baking hobby. It will take a close relative to mend fences.

Finished this book the other night and loved it. How could you. It love a book with this title? I want to be as active Edith when I‘m in my 80‘s. Family and friendship form the foundation of this novel and what happens when the relationship is tested. While I‘m not a big fan of beer, I appreciated how the women were the brewers in this book and had such passion for it. I hope the book tour includes beer tastings!
