This book will help you to learn Spanish - or the Spanish guitar - faster. This book will give an athlete the edge to turn Silver into Gold. This book will give any child the chance to perform better in exams. Full stop. How We Learn is a landmark book that shakes up everything we thought we knew about how the brain absorbs and retains information. Filled with powerful - and often thrillingly counter-intuitive - wisdom, stories and practical tips, it gets to the very heart of the learning process; and gives us the keys to reach our very fullest potential in every walk of life.

Nothing is completely lost, but the memory trace is altered and for good.
As scientists put it, using our memories changes our memories.

How We Learn | Benedict Carey

If the brain is a learning machine, then it‘s an eccentric one. And it performs best when its quirks are exploited.

How We Learn | Benedict Carey

The brain is not like a muscle. It's something else altogether, sensitive to mood, to timing, to circadian rhythms, as well as to location, environment. It registers far more than we‘re conscious of and often adds previously unnoticed details when revisiting a memory or learned fact. It works hard at night, during sleep. It has a strong preference for meaning over randomness, and finds nonsense offensive. It doesn‘t take orders so well.

But there‘s something else in there, too, a lower-frequency signal that takes a while to pick up, like a dripping faucet in a downstairs bathroom: doubt.

This book is a must-read for anyone, especially students or parents of students. It does a great job of breaking down how our brains take in information and learn. It is highly accessible and the writer's tone is friendly and highly conversational. #learn #education #advice #selfhelp

At work before 6 on a Monday. These are the mornings audiobooks were made for.

At least the first 1/3 is information that anyone familiar with the basics of learning will know: the difference between storage and retrieval, the importance of spaced repetition, the beginnings of memory-focused research, etc. I just couldn't slog through it anymore waiting for something new.

Don't love audio books but I'm hoping non-fiction will work for me. Suggestions welcome!

Owlizabeth I love listening to non-fiction!! I highly recommend the audio of The Disappearing Spoon. Or any Sam Kean. 8y
Smrloomis @Owlizabeth thanks, I'll check those out! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @smrloomis -- Listening to a non-fiction audiobook can seem like I'm listening to a lecture, sermon, or newscast. I especially like listening to self-help. I've recently been listening to both of Marie Kondo's books. "Spark Joy" fits in the 300-word limit. Her first volume is tagged. 8y

Donna_sBookMinute @Smrloomis -- I think this entry has the most activity. If I picked the wrong again, just check some others. I don't know why the title is repeated so many times. 8y
Smrloomis Thanks @Donna_sBookMinute! I listened to the Life-changing audio and liked it. Maybe I should put next but will it be good on audio - since it's illustrated? Not sure! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Smrloomis -- I started listening to "Spark Joy" before I realized it was illustrated. I was still benefitting from it. I'm now a convert and may not be the most reliable reviewer. I'm gonna ?? whatever she puts out. Waiting for the phone app. The illustrations in SJ ARE helpful. 8y
Smrloomis @Donna_sBookMinute There's going to be a phone app? Hmm, I'll keep your thoughts in mind, thanks! 8y

TR: I was amazed at the information it contains, and how it was written for ready comprehension. It stands the traditional ideas on learning on end, and the ways to make the most of one's brain fascinating and useful. Also provides a solid basis for the knowledge it provides.

Mystic.Archives.Of.Dantalian A good nonfiction PICK! 9y
