The Unbreakable Code | Jennifer Chambliss Bertman
9 posts | 13 read | 5 to read
A New York Times-Bestseller! Could books hidden through Book Scavenger be linked to an arsonist's web of destruction? Find out in Book 2 of Jennifer Chambliss' The Book Scavenger series. Mr. Quisling is definitely up to something mysterious, and Emily and James are on high alert. First, theres the coded note he drops at a book event. Then they uncover a trail of encrypted messages in Mark Twain-penned books hidden through Book Scavenger. Whats most suspicious is that each hidden book triggers a fire. As the sleuthing friends dig deeper, they discover Mr. Quisling has been hunting a legendary historical puzzle: the Unbreakable Code. This new mystery is irresistible, but Emily and James cant ignore the signs that Mr. Quisling might be the arsonist. The clock is ticking as the fires multiply, and Emily and James race to crack the code of a lifetime. This title has Common Core connections. A Christy Ottaviano Book

There are very few middle grade books that I find I can become invested in, by this series definitely makes the list! I always love the mysteries and the ciphers, (even though I have no idea how to do any of them) and I feel invested in the characters.

This one was a bit haunting because the author‘s note mentioned a ship that‘s buried under San Francisco and had burned down, ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️ so they built a hotel on top of it which also burned down so they rebuilt and it BURNED DOWN AGAIN. And that‘s all real stuff the happened. This book was about a made-up cipher that was supposedly cursed and had survived all those fires. Great read! 5⭐️ 3y

The kids and I finished the second book of the Book Scavenger series today and it was awesome!

Set in San Francisco, two kids are determined to solve the unbreakable code. Made famous by Mark Twain, the code is known for the curse of fire it supposedly brings to those who try to solve it.

I also appreciated how the story brought in the long history of Chinese Americans in San Francisco, and some of the racism they‘ve faced.

Peddler410 I love this series ALMOST as much as the Lemonchello series. 6y

I bought this book from the bargain section of Barnes & Noble last night. Problem is that I don't own book one, nor have I even read it yet. But I've heard good things about this series from you wonderful Littens, so I knew I should buy it even if it was book two. Just an excuse to find book one and buy it, too, right? #blameitonLitsy

LibrarianRyan I did the same thing 2 weeks ago. I thought I had book 1, but alas no. 😆 7y

smilingshelves @Eggs Glad to hear you liked it! I'm really looking forward to reading it (as soon as I buy a copy!). 😄 7y
BucklingBookshelves Middle grade with “book” in the series title totally would have sold me too — book #2 or not! Looks like Book Outlet has the first (and the second, sooooo they‘re both sitting in my cart for the moment 🙊😬📚) 7y
LibrarianRyan @Bucklingbkshelf I apparently confused Book Scavenger with Island of Dr Libris which is also on my shelf. If you haven't read them yet check out 7y
smilingshelves @LibrarianRyan The Mr. Lemoncello books are some of my favorite middle grade books! These Book Scavenger ones look similar, although it'd be hard to match the zaniness of Mr. Lemoncello! 7y
smilingshelves @Bucklingbkshelf I've got book one in my Book Outlet cart now, too! Good idea. Which means now it's time to start browsing and see what else I can add to it... 😁 7y
LibrarianRyan @smilingshelves if your gonna do one, do the entire series. And include island of Dr. Libris. All on. BOokoutlet. I may spend too much time on there myself. 7y
BucklingBookshelves @LibrarianRyan they all look good! @smilingshelves I have a $5 reward for Book Outlet — I‘m not buying yet... but I‘m sure I will 🙊😬📚 (edited) 7y
Revenge4bess Read book 1. It‘s great! 4y

Such fun at the book launch last night for The Unbreakable Code. The kids had some pretty awesome questions (what's your most favorite book that you wrote, anyone?) and Jenn shared some stories about her writing process. Love her!

This is one of the many books I'm looking forward to in 2017. This one is close to my heart because it's written by a dear friend and sorority sister from college and this series is a dream come true for her. For anyone with middle-grade readers, I highly recommend the first in the series, Book Scavenger. #READATHON2017 @Liberty
