The Pacific Northwest was one of the most populated and prosperous regions for Native Americans before the coming of the white man. By the mid-1800s, measles and smallpox decimated the Indian population, and the remaining tribes were forced to give up their ancestral lands. Vine Deloria Jr. tells the story of these tribes’ fight for survival, one that continues today.

This should be required reading for anyone in the Pacific Northwest. The author is Native American, so the book is very sympathetic to their struggles.

SamAnne I live in Spokane and work on getting 4 dams removed from the lower Snake river fie salmon and Tribes. Really recommend Invasion of the Inland Northwest about the Palouse tribe. And Thunder in the Mountains about the Nez Perce war. As colonizers we have an obligation to read the history and stories of the First Peoples. 6y

Doughtah I‘m reading An Indigenous Peoples History of the US and this sentiment is detailed in that book, too. It‘s cool getting to read my country‘s history from a perspective that wasn‘t talked about as much in school. 6y
