Grand Avenues
Grand Avenues: The Story of Pierre Charles L'Enfant, the French Visionary Who Designed Washington, | Scott W. Berg
1 post | 1 to read
In 1791, shortly after the United States won its independence, George Washington personally asked Pierre Charles LEnfanta young French artisan turned American revolutionary soldier who gained many friends among the Founding Fathersto design the new nation's capital. LEnfant approached this task with unparalleled vigor and passion; however, his imperious and unyielding nature also made him many powerful enemies. After eleven months, Washington reluctantly dismissed LEnfant from the project. Subsequently, the plan for the city was published under another name, and LEnfant died long before it was rightfully attributed to him. Filled with incredible characters and passionate human drama, Scott W. Bergs deft narrative account of this little-explored story in American history is a tribute to the genius of Pierre Charles L'Enfant and the enduring city that is his legacy. From the Trade Paperback edition.

As a #longtimefed I worked in a total of seven different buildings. I saw on Bluesky this morning that the current regime has offered hundreds of federal buildings for sale, about a third of them in the Washington DC area.

You would think a real estate genius would know that selling multiple properties at once, when the agency managing those properties has had its staff cut, might not bring the highest price? Or maybe that‘s not the goal?

kspenmoll OMG they are selling our buildings. Please no one buy them! 1d

Aims42 Real estate genius + 🍑🤡 does not compute. Again, how did a man who declared bankruptcy on his businesses not once, not twice, BUT multiple times become our president??? 1d

Leftcoastzen @Aims42 it‘s actually 6 bankruptcies. He‘s a total grifter. 1d
Tamra Also, to what office are workers being required to return to? 🤔 hmmmmmmm 1d
AmyG We will become like Russia. A country of oligarchs. Run by a dictator. 1d
Amor4Libros @Tamra That was my first thought, too! 1d
Susanita @kspenmoll In “normal” times I would be in favor of selling excess and repurposing the buildings. This happened to the sixth building where I worked, and it made sense. However, these are not normal times. 😒 1d
Leftcoastzen Many federal workers said when they were forced to come back to the office, no desk , no chair, no computer, no WiFi 1d
ImperfectCJ It's possible that it's by design...lower the prices so a handful of wealthy investors can buy up the real estate. It's a stated goal of the administration (via its unelected representative) to privatize as much of the government as possible, and it's in line with the Russian model for oligarchs to gather up all they can at prices engineered to be low by intentionally flooding/crashing the market. A good time to re-read the tagged. 6h
