Elwyn's Dream
Elwyn's Dream: Saving the Takahe | Ali Foster, Walker, Viv
1 post
Cute picture book telling the true story of how New Zealand's takahe were rescued from extinction by chickens. In this classic story of Kiwi ingenuity back in the 1950s, a young man called Elwyn Welch used bantam hens to sit on takahe eggs and then raise the young chicks along with their own chicks. So successful was this plan, that takahe still live in New Zealand, even though they remain endangered. Elwyn's farm later became Pukaha Mount Bruce, New Zealand's National Wildlife Centre. Written by Ali Foster, this charming story won the Mitre 10 Takahe rescue short story competition.

A long time ago I managed charitable sponsorships for the company where I worked. One of them was a rescue fund for a highly endangered native bird - the flightless Takahe. We ran a short story competition which resulted in this book - and I did a book launch event. We also paid for a Braille version to be made as the author worked with a sight compromised child. Giving him the book is such a special memory 💕
