Four Soldiers
Four Soldiers: A Novel | Hubert Mingarelli
8 posts | 4 read | 10 to read
A small miracle of a book, perfectly imagined and perfectly achieved. Hilary Mantel, author of Booker Prize-winning novels Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies A novel of war, revolution, youth, and friendship by the remarkable (Ian McEwan) French author of A Meal in Winter Hubert Mingarellis simple, powerful, and moving stories of men in combat have established him as one of the most exciting new voices in international fiction. In Four Soldiers he tells the story of four young soldiers in 1919, members of the Red Army during the Russian civil war. It is set in the harsh dead of winter, just as the soldiers set up camp in a forest in Galicia near the Romanian front line. Due to a lull in fighting, their days are taken up with the mundane tasks of trying to scratch together what food and comforts they can find, all the time while talking, smoking, and waiting. Waiting specifically for spring to come. Waiting for their battalion to move on. Waiting for the inevitable resumption of violence. Recalling great works like Isaac Babels Red Cavalry, Ernest Hemingways A Farewell to Arms, and Stephen Cranes The Red Badge of Courage, Four Soldiers is a timeless and tender story of young male friendships and the small, idyllic moments of happiness that can illuminate the darkness of war.

#WanderingJune Can‘t say why I purchased these two books yesterday when I have hundreds of others on my TBR but #BlameItOnLitsy is the cause. Tagged book is a story of 4 #Russian(s) soldiers as they wait between battles, which doesn‘t sound all that exciting but I‘ve seen/read good reviews.

This was shortlisted for #InternationalManBooker2019

TrishB Sounds interesting 👍🏻 5y
squirrelbrain That was good timing! Do you often buy books based on the next day‘s prompt?! 👍😁 5y

Beautiful captured moments between a group of soldiers who are waiting for the next battle. While the story is plotless, chapters and sentences are short, written in simple prose, the final effect is the opposite of this modesty. Rich in emotions, but without sentimentality, and while this story is set in wartime it is (almost) without battlefield. Elegant and absorbing. #MBIP2019 #ManBookerInternationalPrize ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#manbookerinternational2019 #hoopla This was a short, sweet novel about a small group of soldiers in the Russian Civil War. This isn‘t a war novel, though. It‘s about the friendship between the four young men of the title, how their friendship grows, and how it quickly falls apart in the face of war. The writing is spare and direct to the point of feeling choppy. It is also, unfortunately, spare of details of time and place. Overall 3.5⭐️ #mbi2019

I found this story of four young friends in WWI very moving. It was simple but rich. A quick read, but I think it‘ll stay with me. A rare find.

Soubhiville As a groomer I can tell you most cats HATE getting groomed. I actually refuse to do cats because of how bad it is for them. 6y
Soubhiville He‘s very handsome though, and I bet he‘ll be extremely regal when his coat comes back. I love his name too! 6y

This short book was my first of the mbi longlist this year and like 'a meal in winter ' it is about the experience of war for the ordinary soldier. This centres on four Russian men fighting in the civil war post revolution who find unusual frienship and respite for a short period. Remarkably simple story but when you put it down it's effect is profound.

I went a bit crazy today when i took 2 bks back to the library and came out with 7! My reserved bk was an elusive womens prize nominee. But as i love translated fiction + the IB list was out this week, i was excited to find 2 nominees and if the title bk is half as good as A meal in winter i will be pleased. And after watching the ridiculous state of politics this wk i need to escape so international literature is my small protest at brexit.

TrishB You go 👍🏻 it has indeed been a tiring week in politics.... 6y
rockpools That is an impressive library haul! And as for reading international as a protest, I‘m with you all the way. (When I‘m not hiding under this rock, pretending not to watch the news channels 🙄) 6y
Cathythoughts Nice stack 👍🏻. I was tempted to get Mouthful of Birds the other day. I‘ll look out for your thoughts... 6y
