A widow, at an age when birthdays are best forgotten, with no children to occupy her mind, can be very lonely. Julia Dunstan knew she was more fortunate than most widows, not merely because she was prosperous--as widows go--but because she had always taken an interest in other people. And from the moment Julia moves to Goatstock, where she has inherited a house, there are plenty of people for her to take an interest in. For a start, there's cousin Dora, who might just as easily been left the house herself and who instead becomes Julia's companion. Then there's Lady Finch, the local expert on Fresh Food and the victim of a deception so dastardly that even her attractive but irreverent niece, Harriet, is indignant. This distracts Harriet for a while from the rather thankless task of planning the futures of her friends, Marian and Robert. And all are concerned with news that the village will be made into a "New Town." However the old values, at least those of Elizabeth Fair's fiction, remain: wit, charm, and romance. Furrowed Middlebrow is delighted to make available, for the first time in over half a century, all six of Elizabeth Fair's irresistible comedies of domestic life. These new editions all feature an introduction by Elizabeth Crawford. "Where she breaks with the Thirkell school is in her total absence of sentimentality and her detached and witty observation of her characters."--The Sphere "Miss Fair makes writing look very easy, and that is the measure of her creative ability."--Compton Mackenzie

This is one of my favorite kinds of books - where we are dropped smack-dab into the middle of village life as though we‘ve always lived there. Nothing of much real importance happens, so every little daily detail takes on importance. Julia Dunstan reminds me a bit of Jane Austen‘s Emma - believing she knows best, she tries to fix and improve everyone around her. A delightful, light, entertaining read.
#FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

Ruthiella Oh yes! She is rather like Emma. Well meaning meddling but without a firm grasp on reality. 3mo

I read this in July, and while I enjoyed it while I was reading it, I must admit that now I can‘t remember a thing about it, except the townspeoples‘ fear of becoming a New Town. Delightful, in the ephemeral way these books sometimes are.

Tamra I haven‘t gotten to it yet! 😬 3mo
Ruthiella Oh well. This one was right up my alley. 😃 I don‘t remember everyone‘s names but I definitely remember the plot points. (edited) 3mo

My first Elizabeth Fair, but not my last!
1950s village England with gossipy busybodies, rivalries, romantic crushes, mixed in with urgent worries (based strictly on rumor!) of being overrun & turned into a smoggy New Town. Likable oddballs abound. My favorite: seeing their internal monologues directly contradict their outward words/actions. Enjoyable read with satisfying endings.
And the cover is 💯😉
Read with the #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

Ruthiella I loved the breadth of characters here - somewhat eccentric but all believable. This will also not be my last Elizabeth Fair book ! 3mo
Jess_Read_This You captured the book perfectly in your review! I enjoyed it too. 3mo

It surprised me how a story about interfering and gossipy people in a village could be so enjoyable and even page-turning at times. This was good escapist entertainment and I'm definitely interested in reading more by Elizabeth Fair.

Ruthiella I also now want to read more from E. Fair on the strength of this title! 😃 3mo
Librarybelle Escapist entertainment…stacking! 3mo
julieclair This was my first Elizabeth Fair, although another of her books has been on my TBR for quite awhile. Now I‘m motivated to move it closer to the top of that loooong list. 3mo
kwmg40 @julieclair I'll have to keep A Winter Away in mind. It seems like a good one to save for when the snowy season returns! 3mo

I enjoyed this #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub read quite a bit! The village gossip, intrigues, and purloined honeycomb entertained me. The Minnis‘ garden party reminded me of a scene from a Mapp and Lucia book. The boozy vicar drew a laugh out of me. My heart needed a happy ever after which I‘m choosing to believe happened here as Goatstock remained free becoming “New Town”. It lives as a secret hamlet in my mind full of Aged Animals and people.

willaful Happy aged animals quietly living out their retirements. 😁 4mo
Ruthiella I think it‘s reasonable to assume a happy ending for all! It‘s not spelled out but I think Harriet and Robert also became engaged. 4mo
Jess_Read_This @willaful Yes! 😄 My kind of happily ever after! 4mo

A re-read for me, but still a pleasant time. It's probably my least favorite Elizabeth Fair, but very cozy and the quintessential #furrowedmiddlebrow publication, I think.

#furrowedmiddlebrowclub

Ruthiella Your LEAST FAVORITE Elizabeth Fair? Wow. I‘m totally looking forward to reading more from her then, because I thought this was great. 😊 4mo
quietjenn Yep, I like her immensely. This one is good, but I think the others are even better. 🙂 Although I haven't yet read the one that was rediscovered! 4mo

Starting this now with a lovely cider from the local lavender festival. Lavender cider and the July #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub read are what I needed on this Sunday evening. @Tamra I‘m adopting your quiet hour before making dinner routine!

Tamra Isn‘t it wonderful?! 😍 Such a lovely view. (edited) 4mo
Jess_Read_This @Tamra Thank you! The scent of freshly cut grass is in the air and I‘m glad we were able to mow before the pop up storms happen. 4mo

Gentle, amusing, filled with delightfully eccentric characters. Quite enjoyed my visit to the 1950s village of Goatstock where ladies wear proper hats and aged animals are cared for.

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

jlhammar And thank goodness that Alaric was not under the spell of Miss Brigg after all and that the dreaded New Town was not to be! 4mo
Ruthiella I loved the gentle comedy in this one. I‘d love to see it adapted for the small screen. 4mo
Jess_Read_This Just starting now and am thrilled to hear the aged animals are cared for in the book! I need a feel good read! 4mo

Here‘s a snapshot from the charity meeting for the Aged Animals‘ Pension Fund. 😂

I thought this book was lovely. My only complaint is that the ending was a tad abrupt. Widowed Julia Dunstan inherits a house in the country settles herself in with the aim of improving the lives of everyone around her, regardless of their personal wishes. Shades of Barbara Pym and Mapp & Lucia, but still very much its own thing.

The theft of the honeycombs! 😱🤣

LeahBergen I‘m saving this to come back to when I finally finish! 😆 4mo
Ruthiella @LeahBergen I look forward to your keen observations! 😃 4mo

Ruthiella @Cathythoughts Thanks! It‘s fun to try and think of what I can display since I read most of these on kindle. 4mo
Tamra I‘m going to finish up East of Eden and then read this one. I hope it makes a good transition read. 🙂 4mo
Ruthiella @Tamra It will be a nice palate cleanser! No one is evil like Cathy! 😱 4mo
CarolynM 🤣 Just how I pictured it! Great review. 4mo
jlhammar 😂 Great photo. And yes, the honeycombs - how dare she! I was chuckling throughout this book, lots of little zingers. 4mo
Ruthiella @jlhammar I thought maybe Miss Pope was being a little paranoid until that point. But it really sealed the deal! 😂 4mo
Ruthiella @CarolynM If you look hard, you‘ll even see an animal! No idea if it is aged or not or deserving of a pension. 😆 4mo
erzascarletbookgasm I‘m curious about this charity meeting. Will be starting the book soon 4mo

Not much story, but what an entertaining collection of characters! I loved Harriet & her Aunt Finch (I could just imagine Aunt Finch as a Suffragette, yelling slogans while chained to the railings at the Palace of Westminster😆) & I liked Robert for seeing her charms. The interactions between Mrs Prentice and Mrs Minnis were a hoot, but as for the Popes… oh dear.

Ruthiella I loved this character rich novel. It could have gone on and on, as far as I was concerned. 😃 It wasn‘t the Popes that got me, but the family Minnis or should I say MENACE! 😂 Guard your vacuum and borrowed tools! 4mo
LeahBergen I‘m hoping to get to it soon (and then I‘ll come back to comment 😄). 4mo
Jess_Read_This I hope to start this one tonight. I need some entertaining characters in my life at the moment 😂 4mo
jlhammar Planning to enjoy this over the weekend! 4mo

Hiya #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub reading buddies! It‘s almost time for our July 2024 pick by Elizabeth Fair. She‘s a new to me author and this story sounds like it‘ll be fun and cozy read set in a village with eccentric characters.

Please read at your own pace and post at will. We usually aim to be done mid month, but there‘s no hard or fast rule! Be sure to tag the group if you do post so we can join in on the discussion.

LeahBergen It will be my first read by this author, too! 👏 5mo
