pickThis is from the writer of “I Hate Fairyland”, and I loved that comic. I guess I was hoping for something similar here, but this is completely different, a lot darker and without the humor. For a long time, this was a so-so read for me, but as I finished I realized I wanted to know what happens next.
This is about Abel, and the troubled relationship he has with his father.

Thrilled to learn that Middlewest is nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Publication for Teens (ages 13-17). I love everything about this comic—the writing, the art, the colors, the story. It‘s all fantastic and I can‘t wait to see where the adventure takes us next.

It‘s Wednesday & you know what that means...NEW COMICS!!! Middlewest #1 sold out super fast when it came out last November but good news, the second printing (with a cover by Skottie Young) is on shelves today. It‘s my favorite single issue of any comic in 2018 & I highly recommend it. I‘m a broken record, I know, but I love the variant covers for Wilson‘s Wonder Woman run. Rainbow Rowell‘s Runaways is excellent & Deadpool because Skottie Young.
It was a great year for diving into the world of comics. Middlewest #1 was my favorite—there‘s still, almost two months later, a single panel I cannot get out of my head. Just awesome. Not pictured but also among my favorites, Saga of the Swamp Thing, Descender, and Deadly Class.
30 books/comics in November & these were my favorites. It‘s no secret I‘m a huge fan of Skottie Young. I picked up Middlewest knowing I would like it & somehow it surpassed my expectations. It‘s powerful & engrossing—there‘s a panel where the dread is so visceral, you feel it right along with the main character (one moment of many). Perhaps the best thing Young has written yet & hands down my favorite read of Nov. Another great month of reading.
Because I loved this first issue that just came out today, here's a look at the first splash page. 😍
This feels like it's going to be a pretty special series! It centers around a boy named Abel who...is having some problems getting along with his father. Not much is revealed yet, but it feels like it's our world...only with a layer of magic of a sort.
I loved this 1st issue & can definitely say it's worth a trip to the shop to check it out.
pickDid I make a house full of people wait to start the holiday festivities so I could hit the comic store &, amongst other things, pick up Issue #1 of Young‘s new comic, Middlewest? Yes, yes I did & I‘m thankful they were good humored about it. Middlewest is outstanding, a compelling examination of childhood in a world both strange & familiar, where darkness lurks within reach but so too does wonder. Great story, gorgeous artwork. Highly recommended.
