The Blood
The Blood: What secrets lie aboard? | E. S. Thomson
8 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
'Love evocative descriptions of Victorian London and brilliant plotting? Then grab a copy of this!' Rebecca Griffiths, author of The Primrose Path A world of secrets, murder and betrayal lie behind the London waterfront . . . Summoned to the riverside by the desperate, scribbled note of an old friend, Jem Flockhart and Will Quartermain find themselves on board the seamen's floating hospital, an old hulk known only as The Blood, where prejudice, ambition and murder seethe beneath a veneer of medical respectability. On shore, a young woman, a known prostitute, is found drowned in a derelict boatyard. A man leaps to his death into the Thames, driven mad by poison and fear. The events are linked - but how? Courting danger in the opium dens and brothels of the waterfront, certain that the Blood lies at the heart of the puzzle, Jem and Will embark on a quest to uncover the truth. In a hunt that takes them from the dissecting tables of a private anatomy school to the squalor of the dock-side mortuary, they find themselves involved in a dark and terrible mystery. x x x Praise for E.S. Thomson 'The Blood exerts a fearsome grip from the off. Thomson is an expert and witty guide to the medical underbelly of Victorian London and her book oozes viscera and atmosphere on every page. Terrific stuff!' Graeme Macrae Burnet 'Meticulously researched and masterfully plotted, E.S. Thomson has written a complex, harrowing and highly enjoyable tale' Daily Express 'Here's a tale of Victorian London to freeze your blood on a cold winter's night' Evening Telegraph 'Jem Flockhart's London is vivid, pungent and perilous. The Blood takes you to places you will love to picture but be grateful you can't smell' Chris Brookmyre 'E. S. Thompson's Jem Flockhart books are the best I've read in years. Jem is just my kind of heroine: scarred, smart, complex, and unapologetically queer' Kirsty Logan, author of The Gracekeepers 'It's rare that a book is Gothic enough for me, but Beloved Poison is killing it. The blood, the bones, the crumbling hospital . . .' Laura Purcell, author of The Silent Companions 'Jem Flockhart is a marvel . . . This vivid journey into the dark side of the human soul is a thoroughly engrossing tale' Mary Paulson Ellis, author of The Other Mrs Walker 'Deliciously dark and vividly atmospheric, menace oozes from every page. Terrific for lovers of historical noir' Saga 'A first class piece of historical crime writing' Big Issue A marvellous, vivid book ... immaculately researched and breathtakingly dark' Janet Ellis, author of The Butcher's Hook

Pickpick

The third in E. S. Thomson‘s JEM FLOCKHART historical crime series is rich in period detail (especially in relation to medical practice of the time) and I really enjoyed the exploration of gender and race during this time but the plot sagged in the final quarter, with Jem doing some strange things for unconvincing reasons while the antagonist and their motives were a little under-baked, although I‘d still check out the rest of the series.

Mehso-so

The third in the series and basically the same as the previous two books, so much so that reading this book was tedious. While I enjoyed The first in the series which was something new, different and enjoyable you can have too much of a good thing. I have now had enough of this series which prompted me to cancel the next book that I had Pre-ordered. While the book is descriptive it lacks excitement.

Discovered I had a ThriftBooks credit so I decided to order the next in series of a newer favorite of mine. Here‘s the third in the Jem Flockhart mystery series.

The picture doesn‘t do the cover justice... #coverlove♥️

I actually ordered two books so this is the first #bookmail expected. The other book is coming from Oregon and is currently in Illinois...taking the scenic route. 😊🤣

catebutler Ooh! I just read the description and this sounds amazing! 6y
robinb @catebutler I read the first one not really expecting that much but was really surprised and pulled in by the writing depth. Good atmosphere and a bit dark and gritty...loved the first two! (edited) 6y
catebutler @robinb I‘m so excited! Thank you for tagging the first book, I‘m looking forward to checking it out. 6y
robinb @catebutler Great! I‘ll look forward to hearing what you think. 😊 6y

I love this historical fiction mystery series. This book was so dark and so engrossing, I couldn‘t put it down. Another great book in the Jem Flockhart series. The London setting is so depressing and gruesome. Jem and Will are a great duo. I love this series and hope she keeps writing books!

US Pub Date: 12/4/18 - I bought the UK version because I couldn‘t wait! 😊

Headinherbooks_27 Sounds like a good one! 6y
