Bloom: A Story of Fashion Designer Elsa Schiaparelli | Kyo Maclear
7 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
A dazzling first-person picture book biography of the life of iconic fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli by the award-winning team who created Julia, Child. Here is the life of iconic fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who as a little girl in Rome, was told by her own mamma that she was brutta. Ugly. So she decided to seek out beauty around her, and found it everywhere. What is beauty? Elsa wondered. She looked everywhere for beauty until something inside of Elsa blossomed, and she became an artist with an incredible imagination. Defining beauty on her own creative terms, Schiaparelli worked hard to develop her designs, and eventually bloomed into an extraordinary talent who dreamed up the most wonderful dresses, hats, shoes and jewelry. Why not a shoe for a hat? Why not a dress with drawers? And she invented a color: shocking pink! Her adventurous mind was the key to her happiness and success--and is still seen today in her legacy of wild imagination. Daring and different, Elsa Schiaparelli used art to make fashion, and it was quite marvelous. Kyo Maclear and Julie Morstad, the dynamic duo who created the critically acclaimed Julia, Child, team up again to bring to life the childhood memories and the inspiring milestones of the legendary Elsa Schiaparelli. With its warm, lyrical text and enchanting illustrations, Bloom shows readers how ingenuity, vision and self doubt all made Schiaparelli truly beautiful. A gift for her older fans and younger audiences who have yet to discover her genius, Bloom is sure to be an enthralling classic.

An inspired #picturebook biography of Italian designer Schiaparelli that focuses on how she overcame her parents‘ opinion of her as the ugly child in their family. Julie Morstad‘s whimsical mixed media illustrations—with lots of signature shocking pink—are a good match for Schiaparelli‘s flamboyant & playful fashions, like a shoe as a hat, or a dress with bureau drawer pockets. Her motto: Dare to be different! #CanadianAuthor

“The colour flashed in front of my eyes. Bright, impossible, imprudent, becoming, life-giving, like all the light and the birds and the fish in the world put together.” (Elsa Schiaparelli, on the invention of shocking pink.)

I love the way this passage evokes the sensibilities of an ultra-imaginative child.

Not everything I make is a success, but through my work a wondrous thing happens. I free myself from Mamma‘s harsh words and Pappa‘s judgement. I free myself to be daring, different and whole. I plant a new seed of beauty.

Lindy @Tanisha_A I‘ve long had an interest in both fine arts & graphic narrative, and so I read about artists and their work. I‘ve given workshops & talks on the subject (when I was still working at the public library). A starting point: 6y
Tanisha_A @Lindy Wow! I'll check that one out. I am a fan of Zen Pencils. And Persepolis is one my favourite graphic books. 6y

#Gratitude30 Day 19: The redefinition of what constitutes #beauty made Bloom truly work for me. In her efforts to look pretty, Elsa even went as far as plant seeds on her face, just so flowers will bloom and change the way she looked. A fascinating picturebook biography of Schiaparelli, born on 1890 in Roma. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-j03
