From the bestselling author of The Tuscan Child comes a beautiful and heart-rending novel of a woman's love and sacrifice during the First World War.As the Great War continues to take its toll, headstrong twenty-one-year-old Emily Bryce is determined to contribute to the war effort. She is convinced by a cheeky and handsome Australian pilot that she can do more, and it is not long before she falls in love with him and accepts his proposal of marriage. When he is sent back to the front, Emily volunteers as a "land girl," tending to the neglected grounds of a large Devonshire estate. It's here that Emily discovers the long-forgotten journals of a medicine woman who devoted her life to her herbal garden. The journals inspire Emily, and in the wake of devastating news, they are her saving grace. Emily's lover has not only died a hero but has left her terrified--and with child. Since no one knows that Emily was never married, she adopts the charade of a war widow. As Emily learns more about the volatile power of healing with herbs, the found journals will bring her to the brink of disaster, but may open a path to her destiny.

Finding love by chance during war, not knowing who will come back from war or where life will take you. A lot of it is a love story, also a lot on different classes of people, and of course the Great War.

I started this today and I am feeling very meh about it. Possibly because of the state of the world right now, but the main character seems incredibly vapid and the overall tone of the book might be too flippant for me. It doesn't seem as lightheaded as her mystery books but also not as serious as the time period deserves? If you read it let me know what you thought!!

An enjoyable WWI read, centering on the experience of the land girls. Not really a mystery, FYI, and not quite as good as In Farleigh Field, but fun nonetheless. I do enjoy Bowen‘s books, especially the Royal Spyness romps. And it was my #doublespin! I‘ve got a few possible bingoes lined up, and I need to get any summer themed books read fast. I can‘t stand out-of-season reading. Onward!

TheAromaofBooks haha I hardly ever read books IN season, so I admire your ability to stick to the seasons!! 4y

Day 29 - #Victory #MarchMadness
#TheVictoryGarden #RhysBowen

I have 20 of Bowen‘s books and need to read them soon. I love books about diaries and journals and this one sounds very good!

Andrew65 I‘m enjoying the Molly Malone series. Think now read the the first 3. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I need to read those too. I just have too many books and it takes me too long to get around to some of them. Just read about your food shopping trip. Glad to hear it was such a success! (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Relieved that not many people there! Or any in this case. Rather that and compromise on what I buy, than take on a crowd of people. (edited) 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 Great idea to go right before the store closes and late in the evening. I have a pickup in the parking lot for tomorrow. My husband is going. I'm not going out anytime soon. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Done that a lot over the past few weeks. We were just down to 4 potatoes! And milk and bread dwindling as was our fruit and eat a lot of fruit will my changes in diet. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Same for us, my wife said do you want me to come and sit in car said no. With her health issues, like you wasn‘t allowing her to go out. Hard to get click and collect, and no home delivery slots for the next two weeks! (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 WOW! Glad you were able to stock up again. The shelves are doing better here as the truckers are doing an awesome job! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Tomorrow after the pickup I'm going to start another order and try to get delivery but the delivery slots were very slim the last time I looked. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Wasn‘t any when I looked earlier today. Still not seen pasta, rice or toilet roll in weeks here. Some fresh meat in short supply too. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Should get better as your shutdown was a while after ours. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I like the way Boris Johnson has led this, bit do feel the shutdown should have come a few days or week sooner, especially in London . Although he and Prince Charles have got the virus now, as well as the Health Secretary. (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! I think he was a bit late on the shutdown. The New York governor is doing a good job but the mayor early was telling people to ride the subways and go to the restaurant and bars and now the city is doing really bad. Probably like London. Sorry to see they all got the virus. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I think the problem for us was a lot of people not taking it seriously enough early enough. Unbelievable how busy tourist spots were last weekend! People are stupid. Read today how well one of the early flash points in New York has stabilised the position with tough action. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes they are doing a bit better but still pretty bad and New Jersey tripled their cases in one day. New Orleans is very bad too because of the stupid people celebrating St. Patrick's Day when things were really bad. They just don't believe that maybe they may die. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Many people have shown a stupid and selfish side, oh yes I‘m young I‘ll be all right. Like playing Russian Roulette. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 So crazy! And then they go and infect others! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Exactly, the vulnerable. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Look at these crazy people! https://youtu.be/K9ZJs1qrZNA 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Totally idiotic! 5y
Eggs I‘ve read several R. Bowen books-enjoyed them! 5y

Mehso-so

Reading Historical novels I often find myself wondering what I would do if I lived in that Time Period. Don't think I would have been a very good nurse but I would have made an excellent Land Girl. Land Girls and Herb Garden was the most interesting part of story. Rest was fairly predictable. It lacked Author's usual sparkle that I've come to expect from reading her Royal Spyness Series. Different genre so understand change in tone. 👩‍🌾

I didn‘t like it as much as Bowen‘s several mystery series or even the other two stand-alone novels. The writing seemed a little simplistic and the plot and conclusion were very predictable. It was a pleasant read, but not what I‘ve come to expect from the author. 3.5/5.0 ⭐️ #2019

A quick cosy read, but it felt a little rushed at the end with too many little subplots barely explored.

Magnificent! Highly recommended for Maisie Dobbs fans. Read it from cover to cover. Definitely stacking her other standalone titles. I‘ve long enjoyed her “Her Royal Spyness” series. #WWI #historicalfiction

A sweet and calming standalone historical fiction read. Set in England during WW1, this is a great read that talks about land girls, victory gardens, and herbal remedies. Some parts were predictable, but a good predictable. I really enjoyed this! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.
