Waking Up
Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion | Sam Harris
For the millions of Americans who want spirituality without religion, Sam Harriss latest New York Times bestseller is a guide to meditation as a rational practice informed by neuroscience and psychology. From Sam Harris, neuroscientist and author of numerous New York Times bestselling books, Waking Up is for the twenty percent of Americans who follow no religion but who suspect that important truths can be found in the experiences of such figures as Jesus, the Buddha, Lao Tzu, Rumi, and the other saints and sages of history. Throughout this book, Harris argues that there is more to understanding reality than science and secular culture generally allow, and that how we pay attention to the present moment largely determines the quality of our lives. Waking Up is part memoir and part exploration of the scientific underpinnings of spirituality. No other book marries contemplative wisdom and modern science in this way, and no author other than Sam Harrisa scientist, philosopher, and famous skepticcould write it.

There were parts I sort of spaced out on, ironically enough. I have long since heard about mindfulness in other places, so it felt like an inferior and unnecessary rehash. The conclusion is really what I expected the whole book to be like. Those were the things I was hoping for throughout the book. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics The neuroscience sections were interesting enough, but it was hard to tell if this book was meant to be science, spirituality, or scientifically provable spirituality. I feel like this book is more about consciousness than spirituality, honestly. 2mo

This may get me some hate, but it‘s true so I‘m game.

Bookwomble All of my thoughts for a humourous numerology quip sounded unsettlingly sinister, so just imagine I'm more witty than I am and that I've said a hilarious thing involving numbers, superstitions and comically menacing retribution! 🎲🎲6️⃣6️⃣6️⃣😑 2mo

Wanted to like it more than I did. The bits on consciousness and meditation were interesting, but didn‘t really introduce me to any new concepts. Admittedly, the book has been out for several years. Some parts were very interesting, while others I really just wanted to skim through. Plus, I‘m always wary of folks who open with statements about LSD opening their mind when it wasn‘t done in a lab setting. Ok read, but not great.

A book about enlightenment, what it is, what experiences are expected from meditation, the nature of consciousness and other compelling arguments about the ego and thought. It's not an easy book to read sometimes, but nonetheless a great insight on an atheist's view on spirituality. This book has changed my perception of gurus and the like will definetly remember the teachings of the author for a long time. I recommend it!

I liked Waking Up for the most part, some parts had me riveted but there were also parts where I felt like fast-forwarding. Sam Harris provides an overview for the nonreligious how to be spiritual – or more specifically, how to be more aware of one‘s consciousness and peacefulness by meditation. Harris is a neuroscientist and has a knack for explaining how our brains work and how mental discipline can lead one to a happier life.

Essential reading for anyone interested in #consciousness, #meditation, #spirituality, or science of mind. Whether religious or not, Waking Up by Sam Harris is an intelligent and masterful analysis of consciousness and self.

"We are always and everywhere in the presence of reality. Indeed, the human mind is the most complex and subtle expression of reality we have thus far encountered. This should grant profundity to the humble project of noticing what it is like to be you in the present. However numerous your faults, something in you at this moment is pristine--and only you can recognize it.
Open your eyes and see."
