April‘s #DoubleSpin is clear—and is also my #44 pick for #50x50. For my #BookSpin, I get to pick a book published in the 1950s—70s for #192025. Above are the three I‘m thinking about… any recommendations?

Suet624 Yay for Anam Cara. I‘ve only read A Separate Peace (as a teenager) out of the three and I liked it. (edited) 5h
TheBookHippie I like them all 👀🤫🙃 4h
BarbaraJean @Suet624 I'm really looking forward to Anam Cara. It's been on my list for so long and it's nice to have the “assignment“ to read it! @TheBookHippie Good news is I'll be reading them all at some point before the end of the year!! 3h
TheBookHippie @BarbaraJean literal DECADES since my reading of them 😂 3h

The ego is the source a lot of anger, heartache and anxiety for many of us. Definitely a new age, philosophy take on how to let things go so that your ego doesn‘t consume your life. Some good parenting tips, but it was repetitive in its advice and anecdotes.

Suet624 That darn ego! 3d

“Every day we awake with a certain amount of mental, emotional, and physical energy that we spend throughout the day. If we allow our emotions to deplete our energy, we have no energy to change our lives or to give to others.”

"All men see the same objects, but do not equally understand them. Intelligence is the tongue that discerns and tastes them, Knowledge is the Light of Heaven, Love is the Wisdom and Glory of God, Life extended to all objects is the sense that enjoys them. So that Knowledge, Life, and Love are the very means of all enjoyment, which above all things we must seek for and labour after."

I‘ve started journaling this year because I‘m reading a book called “My Healthy Noggin” by Bokinia Colbert that‘s about mental wellness journaling right now. The book has guided journal prompts and blank journal pages. Taylor Bradshaw asked this question in his Facebook group and this was my response.

Since I‘m a born muslim I would say that a lot of messages were already clear to me.
If I was a revert or someone who is simply interested in the core messages of Islam then I would recommend it for sure! But it was also refreshing for me and it gave me a kinda new perspective on some stuff.

1. As a very anxious person, I use several different practices for inner peace. Going for walks, meditating, journaling, and drawing are my go-to methods. I do these things regularly and that helps, but I‘ll do them more when I‘m anxious or feeling down.
2. The tagged book and “Upstream” by Mary Oliver (as well as any of her poetry) are my top reads to help with inner peace.

I read this in Jan/Feb for my spiritual direction course, and it was excellent. It both broadened my definition of contemplation and challenged me to see contemplative practices in a new way. Holmes explores contemplative practices of the Black church, bringing in the historical context within which new forms of contemplation necessarily emerged. Viewing community and social activism through the lens of contemplation was illuminating. ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) Holmes also highlights Howard Thurman, MLK, and others as Black contemplatives, and the 2nd edition includes new chapters on Obama‘s presidency, the BLM movement, and explorations of the work of Black artists including Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar. 1w
Kristin_Reads I love Barbara Holmes and loved this book! I read it several years ago. 1w
BarbaraJean @Kristin_Reads This was the first book I‘ve read by her, and I definitely want to seek out more. 1w
