Let the Dead Keep Their Secrets
Let the Dead Keep Their Secrets | Rosemary Simpson
10 posts | 7 read | 17 to read
In Gilded Age New York, heiress Prudence MacKenzie and ex-Pinkerton Geoffrey Hunter investigate crimes that take them from the slums of Five Points in lower Manhattan to the Fifth Avenue mansions of society's elite. In the late nineteenth century, women are particularly vulnerable . . . LET THE DEAD KEEP THEIR SECRETS Childbirth can be dangerous even for the wealthy. So when opera singer Claire Buchanan shows Prudence and Geoffrey a postmortem cabinet photograph of her deceased twin sister and newborn niece, they express sadness but not surprise. The popular black-bordered portraits are the era's way of coping with the devastating losses that plague every family. What makes this death different is that Claire is convinced Catherine and her child were murdered. Prudence's friend is haunted by a sense of her sister's lingering presence, and by the conviction that her dead twin is demanding justice. Catherine's widower, Aaron Sorensen, is a cold, controlling man who swiftly remarried. Now his second wife is already pregnant and may be in terrible danger. In order to discover the truth and find evidence of Sorensen's guilt, Geoffrey will delve deep into his past while Prudence casts herself as his next victimputting her own life at grave risk . . .

I love that a woman is doing much of the investigating. The story didn‘t grip me as much as the first two in the series did, but it did ramp up a bit toward the end. Still enjoying it enough to continue the series.

Opera singer Claire Buchanan is haunted by the recent death of her twin sister Catherine, & niece,in childbirth. Claire feels her sister‘s lingering presence. Postmortem photos offered a way for those left behind to assuage their grief. But Claire sees only deep sadness in her sister‘s eyes. She suspects her brother in-law,a cold, calculating, controlling man of her murder.Claire hires Prudence MacKenzie & ex Pinkerton Geoffrey Hunter to investigate.

Such a gentle breeze, wind chimes-all is quiet after our traditional Village Memorial Day parade, that goes right by my front yard. We join in the end of the parade & go to the cemetery for speeches, a fly over,& a 4-gun salute. Then a short walk away at the fire house, there is coffee, ice cream, hot dogs. Wonderful community event.#MemorialDay #remembrance #porchlife

Such an incredible day with an incredible author! She‘s engaging and funny and very knowledgeable. I couldn‘t have asked for a better day. Pictured is her inscription to me in the tagged book. Such a humbling experience.

Incidentally, she found out today that her editor accepted the draft for her fifth book. A few revisions needed, but it‘s slated to be published November 2020.

KathyWheeler Yay! It all went well. ❤️😊 5y

I LOVE these books. Even back to back. I enjoy the story, the characters the setting. I‘m only bummed I now need to wait for a new one. I highly recommend for a good historical character driven crime fiction.

Crazeedi I read the first 2, havent read this one 6y

Always happy to discover an author who‘s new to me! I enjoyed this one and look forward to going back to read the first two in the series.
Our sleuths are an orphaned young woman whose father was a judge (she wants to be a lawyer) and an ex-Pinkerton detective from North Carolina now making NY his home. Diabolical villains, a hint of romance and a well-plotted story. Especially ❤️ the courageously determined Prudence! 4/5⭐️

Up next (and 39% in), an ARC from #Kensington and #NetGalley. An historical mystery from a new-to-me author who wouldn‘t be so new-to-me if I had realized earlier that this was third in a series....darn it, I hate it when that happens! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😩🙄😂 Guess who‘s going to be playing catch-up at some point in time?! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Oh well, the story of my life....

heidisreads Oh yep! I‘ve done that before. I do like discovering new authors, though! (edited) 6y
robinb @heidifk Me too. I hate coming in to an established series and feeling like I‘m not seeing the whole story, ya know?! At least I don‘t feel totally lost in this one. And yes, I‘m enjoying it so far...new authors you like are always a joy to discover! 👍😊 6y
