Daughters of Temperance Hobbs
Daughters of Temperance Hobbs | Katherine Howe
New York Times bestselling author Katherine Howe returns to the world of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane with a bewitching story of a New England history professor who must race against time to free her family from a curseConnie Goodwin is an expert on America's fractured past with witchcraft. A young, tenure-track professor in Boston, she's earned career success by studying the history of magic in colonial America--especially women's home recipes and medicines--and by exposing society's threats against women fluent in those skills. But beyond her studies, Connie harbors a secret: She is the direct descendant of a woman tried as a witch in Salem, an ancestor whose abilities were far more magical than the historical record shows. When a hint from her mother and clues from her research lead Connie to the shocking realization that her partner's life is in danger, she must race to solve the mystery behind a hundreds'-years-long deadly curse.Flashing back through American history to the lives of certain supernaturally gifted women, The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs affectingly reveals not only the special bond that unites one particular matriarchal line, but also explores the many challenges to women's survival across the decades--and the risks some women are forced to take to protect what they love most.

This was a slow burn of a historical witchy mystery that got better and better as it unfolded. It had been on my #TBR for way too long and I‘m so glad I read it! The #audio narrator was great and the ending was perfect! You don‘t have to have read The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane but it may help with the story. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

I really wanted more of a deep dive on all the women in the family history instead of another mystery for Connie to solve with her research. It was too much of a rehashing, even with the same antagonistic, for me.

Not nearly as good as the first one. The basic premise is that the heroine must to historical research to figure out how to save her boyfriend from a family curse. There are some side plots, but they end up not mattering. It was a fun book to read for the season, but there are probably better witchy books out there.

I liked the idea of this story, much more than the execution. A Boston history professor researching her family history, potential witchy abilities and a family curse: sounds awesome! But the story was too much of a slow burn and I found the protagonist unlikable and kind of dim. Lovely prose though

This was a wonderful sequel to The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. I loved it all. I love the author. She is a witch nerd and a feel a kinship with her because of that. I wish I knew I could have studied that in school, dammit! The historical research is spot on and I love it so much for that. It makes me want to shake sloppy authors and yell "This is how it's done!"

The magical fantasy piece of the story was nice, but what I loved about this book was the very real story of the hard work it takes to build a career in academia—especially for a woman faculty member on the tenure track (in history), and especially for a woman on the tenure track who is pregnant.

A solid 3.75/5 ⭐️. Not my usual book, but I did enjoy the story. Found the end a little flat and that kind of turned me off. But the overall storyline and writing style were good. Would recommend.

Perfect witchy read. I loved The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, and this book, set about 10 years after, was just as good and well-written. I enjoyed revisiting our more modern-day characters, even though Connie was frustrating at the beginning. Adore her mom—I sort of want to be Grace when I grow up. 😂 And the interludes back to the ancestral witches were wonderful, too.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

The tagged book is the sequel to Howe‘s first book. It would be best to read Physick Book of Deliverance Dane first as then Temperance Hobbs would make more sense. I enjoyed both of these books and you will too if you enjoy reading about Salem witches. In this book Connie Goodwin must race against time in order to break a family curse.

My mini book haul. The magnet has an Apache blessing: "May the sun bring you energy by day. May the moon softly restore you by night. May the rain wash away your worries. May the breeze blow new strength into your being. May you walk gently through the world and know its beauty all the days of your life." My new bookmark has a quote from Glinda in The Wizard of Oz: "You've always had the power, my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself." ?

I was so excited to see a sequel to Deliverance Dane. I loved the academic and magical elements of this book and the glimpses into the Goodwin matriarchs, but the relationships and conflict felt flat in the modern day storyline.

The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs picks up several years after The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane (one of my all-time favorite books) ends. While this book contains most of the same characters and settings and refers back to the previous book frequently, it is easily enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. Full of vivid, rich historical accounts of Colonial America, botany, and all things witchy, this is a book I will read again and again!

4/5⭐ This book is a part of a series but could be a standalone. I found the plotline engaging. Theres lots of vivid scenes and magic! I loved all the flashbacks scenes. It was a bit family saga which I love! Connie is a strong woman and was a good character. The writing is really good! This was my first experience with this author I enjoyed her style and I will definitely be looking into her other books in the future. Out on June 25th.

Avanders Part of the series including the Physick Book? Or another one? 6y

I honestly feel like I didn‘t read the same book as everyone else, since most all other reviewers seemed to love or at least like this one. I remember when I read Deliverance Dane that it was decent, although could‘ve been so much more. This one just really disappointed me. The writing was choppy and confusing, the main character not very likable, & the ending a combination of too unrealistic and abrupt.
Am I the only one who thought this??

MoonWitch94 I felt that exact way about ‘Deliverance Dane‘. It could‘ve been SO much more than it was. I‘m on the fence about this new one....not sure if I will give it a try. 6y
Coleen @MoonWitch94 Yes! I also felt that way about Deliverance Dane. I thought the story had such potential. Of the two, I think I liked Deliverance better, if that tells you anything.... 🤷‍♀️ 6y

I enjoyed this, and it didn‘t matter that I hadn‘t read the previous book, The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. It works fine as a stand alone. The characters are interesting, and there are contemporary and historical story lines that complement each other. This was a LibraryThing early reviewer book, and my full review is up there. I‘ll get it on Goodreads, too, but that was being persnickety for me. Recommended 4/5⭐️

DarcysMom I am so excited to read this one! Sadly, I won't be able to get to it until closer to its publication date. 6y
