The first book in this exciting new series will cover history's heavy-hitting, head-scratching mysteries, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Bermuda Triangle, the Oak Island Money Pit, Stonehenge, the Sphinx, the disappearance of entire civilizations, the dancing plague, the Voynich manuscript, and so many more. Littens! I need your help. My daughter asked for nonfiction history books for Christmas. Specifically “some history books (or diaries written by historical peoples—mostly queens and princesses).” She likes histories about France, Western Europe and of course Scandinavia (or anywhere else), but no 20th century wars. Recommendations?

She‘s a smart 16, but age appropriate please!

Thanks everyone!!

TheSpineView Queen Victoria kept a diary. I don't know if it is available in print, but that might be a place to start. 6y
GingerAntics @TheSpineView @Texreader it‘s not exactly in print, at least not in the traditional sense. It actually covers both princess and queen, though. She made entries everyday from about your daughter‘s age until her death. You can get her access to the online archives of it, though. It‘s only free for people in the UK. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I know I have some others that might fit the bill on my own list somewhere, let me take a look for you. 6y
JamieArc I don‘t remember the name, but I think a new book about Marie Antoinette just came out about her time in prison before she was killed, including her letters to people. It sounded fascinating. 6y

JamieArc I wonder if she would like anything written about the Romanovs (Anastasia). I‘m sure Littens would have some recs for this area. 6y
Leniverse Catherine the Great was an excellent letter writer! She corresponded with other rulers and with various big names, like Voltaire. There‘s a collection of selected letters done by Oxford World‘s Classics. I have only read a few excerpts, but I can‘t imagine there would be anything wildly inappropriate in there. 6y
GingerAntics There are the letters of Queen Victoria as well, now that I think about it. There is a book called “My Dearest Dearest Albert” that is Queen Victoria‘s life through her journal and letters. It looks really good. 6y
GingerAntics There is also a book called She-Wolves that talks about woman who ruled England before Elizabeth I. I‘m not entirely sure who all is in it, but by definition its going to include queens and princesses, I would imagine. 6y
GingerAntics Another book she might like, that indirectly involves a princess (inadvertently killed by the Nazi‘s because they didn‘t know who she really was) is “The Secrets of the Notebook.” I inhaled this book in a day. I couldn‘t put it down. It might not fit the bill. It‘s a loose interpretation of her prompt, but she might like it. It‘s a true story, too. The direct descendant of the princess who does the finding is a woman as well. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics I knew you would come through for me!! Please send any and all suggestions! I‘m loving your recommendations! 6y
Texreader @TheSpineView @GingerAntics Sounds perfect! Thanks! 6y
Texreader @JamieArc I‘m going to look for it. Sounds like something she‘d like 6y
Texreader @JamieArc I also think she‘d like the Romanov stories. I‘ve read lots of fiction about them. So interesting 6y
Texreader @Leniverse Sounds wonderful! I‘ll try to see what I can find. Thanks! 6y
GingerAntics I have a feeling I‘ve got others on my list. I‘m looking through various apps and trying to remember titles from the books I used to own physical copies of. I got into history through a very similar route. 6y
Texreader @TheSpineView @GingerAntics Queen Victoria diary is due out in 2019! 6y
TheSpineView @Texreader That's awesome! Thanks for the info.😊 6y
GingerAntics Oh sweet!!! I‘ll have to keep an eye out for it. It‘s got to be interesting. 6y
Tex2Flo Empress Dowager Cixi. About a recent empress of China. Terribly fascinating. 6y
