E.F. Benson‘s first big success (before his Mapp and Lucia novels) was this 1893 novel about a frivolous queen of society who marries for wealth and social rank. It enjoyed record-breaking sales, primarily due to the fact that so many people in his own social circle were written “into such unpleasantly identifiable roles”.

I‘m currently buddy reading this with @shawnmooney and really enjoying it (check out the cover on this 1978 reprint 😆).
