CAREY DARLING She was the privileged wild child of the New York art scene, and my idol. FAKE I was a no-name painter from the Florida backwater, clawing my way into their world. LIKE When she died, she left a space that couldn't be filled. Except, maybe, by ME She was a no-name painter from the Florida backwaters who clawed her way into art school on nothing but talent. They were the enfants terribles of New York, rocking the art scene with daring work and dangerous stunts. And Carey Darling - the blonde waif with her dark, deathly sculpture - was her idol. When Carey dies, she loses her lodestar in an unforgiving world. Now - with a major exhibition and world fame in her grasp, she wins a place at the exclusive retreat in upstate New York where her remaining heroes hide away. She's dreamt of the outrageous revelries, the glamorous artists, the entrance to a forbidden land of privilege. What she finds is a ghost of its former self. No-one speaks of Carey. No-one shares their work. No parties light up the deck. And the black lake where Carey drowned gleams between them all. As she obsessively paints in Carey's studio, uncovers strange secrets and starts to fall - hard and fast - for Carey's mysterious boyfriend, it's as if she's taking her place. But one thought shadows her every move - what really happened to Carey Darling? A darkly satirical and sassy thriller about obsession and identity, Fake Like Me is a modern retelling of Rebecca, the original psychological thriller. With a flair for sensational detail and acidic wit, Barbara Bourland delivers a twist so sharp it cuts.

A lost again, found again, lost again painter has the chance to work at an artists‘ colony in rural New York. But the majestic lore surrounding the renowned colony and the reputations of the artists don‘t live up to the hype. In fact, the small group of friends residing there turn out to not only be sadly normal, but they are hiding a secret that could destroy the lives of all associated with the colony. Interesting but underwhelming. 3.5/5 ⭐️

I am SHOOK. This book is fucking brilliant. It has it all: smart commentary on contemporary and modern art, feminism, love, betrayal, and twists. It might be my favorite read of the year, and Xe Sands, as always, is narration perfection. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A satire on the art world, as well as the complications of establishing an identity. Are you who you think you are, or more what other people experience? A young artist has to recreate her art after her studio burns. Her idol has died, but she gets a chance to stay at the same retreat as people who knew her idol. Only things aren‘t so clear cut or idyllic as she thought. There are deep secrets here that might change her view of everything.

There seems to be a lot of buzz around this book at the moment, and I can see why. It‘s a satire on the art world and a thriller, with a bit of a mystery thrown in. What really happened to Carey Logan, a young artist, and the narrators idol? The unnamed narrator manages to work in Carey‘s studio space after a fire destroys her own, and she must re-do all the paintings. I really enjoyed this - it whizzed by!

#buddyread starting on #twitter on Monday hosted by the publisher. Love the book so far, an aspiring artist longs to be a part of an elite art group named Pine City. Detailed, very vivid descriptions of art, art theory and a gripping storyline. The book is out now if anyone wants to join in. I did the Night Tiger buddy read and it was brilliant.

When Carey Logan, the darling of the art world commits suicide both patrons and fellow artists are left to wonder why. Enter our unnamed narrator, a raising star of the art scene, who soon finds herself being compared to Carey Logan. Following in Carey‘s footsteps our narrator‘s world becomes blurred between art and reality. I found parts of this story similar to Daisy Jones, Still Lives And Museum of Modern Love. #NetGalley #ARC #BorrowNotBuy
