Girl They Left Behind
Girl They Left Behind | Roxanne Veletzos
18 posts | 20 read | 28 to read
A sweeping family saga and love story that offers a vivid and unique portrayal of life in war-torn 1941 Bucharest and life behind the Iron Curtain during the Soviet Union occupation--perfect for fans of Lilac Girls and Sarah's Key. On a freezing night in January 1941, a little Jewish girl is found on the steps of an apartment building in Bucharest. With Romania recently allied with the Nazis, the Jewish population is in grave danger, undergoing increasingly violent persecution. The girl is placed in an orphanage and eventually adopted by a wealthy childless couple who name her Natalia. As she assimilates into her new life, she all but forgets the parents who were forced to leave her behind. They are even further from her mind when Romania falls under Soviet occupation. Yet, as Natalia comes of age in a bleak and hopeless world, traces of her identity pierce the surface of her everyday life, leading gradually to a discovery that will change her destiny. She has a secret crush on Victor, an intense young man who as an impoverished student befriended her family long ago. Years later, when Natalia is in her early twenties and working at a warehouse packing fruit, she and Victor, now an important official in the Communist regime, cross paths again. This time they are fatefully drawn into a passionate affair despite the obstacles swirling around them and Victor's dark secrets. When Natalia is suddenly offered a one-time chance at freedom, Victor is determined to help her escape, even if it means losing her. Natalia must make an agonizing decision: remain in Bucharest with her beloved adoptive parents and the man she has come to love, or seize the chance to finally live life on her own terms, and to confront the painful enigma of her past.

It is a bit of a dream. And so we'll dream it. With a little courage, we can dream it for the rest of our lives.

Finally! Finished the the #bookspin pick for the month of October. 2nd #bookspinbingo too! @TheAromaofBooks

This was a beautiful story about survival during and after WWII. About a young Jewish girl left on an orphanage doorstep because her parents were forced to leave her behind, hoping she would be cared for while they fled to safety. Based on a true story about the author's mother.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Awesome progress!! 4y

Not bad. I didn‘t love this book, but I didn‘t dislike it either.
It‘s based on a true story, which is amazing. However, from the way it was told, I‘m just not sure that I got the full impact from it that I could have.

Book 19
Listened to this book set in Romania during WWII. A baby abandoned by her Jewish parents and raised by loving parents, grows up not knowing why her birth parents left her behind. It was okay but not remarkable.

Megabooks Ask Again Yes is great! 5y
MissAimz_55 3 non fiction and all very different. Also the fiction is very diverse as well. Including middle grade, young adult, historic fiction, and contemporary. LGBT, lots of women authors, mental health, and tough topics. I love that challenges encourage diversity in my reading 💗 5y

Roxanne Veletzos's The Girl They Left Behind gains strength as it builds. It's the story of a four-year-old girl who is left behind by her parents in World War II-era Romania. Natalia is then adopted by a wealthy, childless couple, Despina and Anton, who make her the center of their world. We watch Natalia come of age as Romania changes allegiance from Germany to the Allies and then moves toward the Communist government that takes over. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Veletzos bases Natalia on her own mother, and the parts of the book taht were most compelling for me were (I learned at the end) the parts based on reality. I was less taken with some imagined occurrences, which strained credulity. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod 've written before about my "World War II novel fatigue," and this book (for the most part) escaped that exhaustion by revealing a specific story I hadn't read before. Ultimately, this was a solid read for me (and my book club), if not one that captured me from beginning to end. 5y

Came home to find my March Once Upon a Bookclub Box waiting at my door. The only problem is I‘ve fallen ridiculously behind. I‘m only halfway through my January box! #onceuponabookclubbox #fallingbehind #somanybookssolittletime #booknerdproblems #timetoplaycatchup

The fact that this book is based on a true story made it even more fascinating to read. A Jewish couple has to flee to avoid persecution and decide to leave behind their young daughter to give her a fighting chance at a better life. This story pulls at your hearts strings and really makes you think about how much some people have to go through. Someone else reviewed this book saying it can be slow at times, but is never boring. True!

Lovely story with a gentle pace. Some may find it a bit slow but it is never boring.👍

Loosely based on the author's mother's story as a Romanian orphan during World War 2, extreme anti-Semitism invades the country leading to hundreds of Jews tortured and massacred. Four year Natalia is abandoned by her family and adopted by a wealthy Romanian family. As she grows into a beautiful, young woman, danger lurks as the country enters the Cold War as her true family ties come into question.

I really liked this historical fiction about a girl who is abandoned during a riot in ww2 in order to be saved. She is adopted and after the war lives behind the iron curtain.
