Hippie
Hippie | Paulo Coelho
If you want to learn about yourself, start by exploring the world around you. Drawing on the rich experience of his own life, best-selling author Paulo Coelho takes us back in time to relive the dreams of a generation that longed for peace and dared to challenge the established social order. In Hippie, he tells the story of Paulo, a young, skinny Brazilian man with a goatee and long, flowing hair, who wants to become a writer and sets off on a journey in search of a deeper meaning for his life: first on the famous "Death Train" to Bolivia, then on to Peru, later hitchhiking through Chile and Argentina. Paulo's travels take him farther to the famous Dam Square in Amsterdam filled with young people wearing vibrant clothes and burning incense, meditating and playing music, while discussing sexual liberation, the expansion of consciousness, and the search for an inner truth. There he meets Karla, a Dutch woman in her twenties who has been waiting to find the ideal companion to accompany her on the fabled hippie trail to Nepal. She convinces Paulo to join her on a trip aboard the Magic Bus that travels across Europe and Central Asia to Kathmandu. They embark on the journey in the company of fascinating fellow travelers, each of whom has a story to tell, and each of whom will undergo a personal transformation, changing their priorities and values along the way. As they travel together, Paulo and Karla explore their own relationship: a life-defining love story that awakens them on every level and leads to choices and decisions that will set the course for their lives thereafter.

“We cannot take the lamps that light the way and carry them with us.”

Hippie proves the counterculture was never as unified as history suggests. Each Hippie was on their own path to enlightenment. Kinda reminds me of all the EDM kids at the airport right now.

Paulo Coelho is a storyteller. He takes a story that might not seem too exciting and makes it brilliant. This is a great inside view of the “hippie” worldview of the time. Love, tragedy, and fate are intermingled in this magical journey on the “magic bus”

1970
Hippie Trails
"The Invisible Post"
"The Death Train"
"The Magic Bus"....
I was born in 1972 so I missed being a teen/adult in this awesome era but I feel very strangely connected to it. I think I have always have been a Hippie at heart....
I love the feeling this memoir gives, its like I'm right there seeing and feeling all the sights and sounds of the 70's, traveling around with Paulo in his early 20's.
Very cool so far!!

slategreyskies I‘ve never heard of this book. It looks interesting! :) 5y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @slategreyskies I think it's new, only published last year, 2018. 5y

It's easygoing and Its so absolutely beautiful. It puts forth different points of views about the world and different religions, along with a gorgeous storyline which reads perfectly.

I love how Coelho makes me think deeply. I wilm always pick up what he has written. This was an book based on his travels as a "hippie" in the 1970s. I love history so i enjoyed the bits of history throughout the book. At times though, I felt that i was listening to a tired and monotone professor telling us about his amazing experiences. Come on! Lets put some passion behind those words, but i still enjoyed it. ????

3/5⭐Full review on my blog in bio.

I have read many of Coelho‘s books, even since I was a teenage girl. And all of them share something in common – the path of finding yourself. After reading Hippie, I believe that this is the the best one that covers this subject quite perfectly.

This is a story about people that travel the world, wear funny clothes and flowers in their hairs, and believe in peace, love and freedom.

Turn back the clock and remember the free love movement of this nostalgic time. Two people meet in Amsterdam during a difficult political time and find spirituality and life ex pi experiences along the way.

In Hippie Coelho takes us back to 1969 following Woodstock where a young man dreams of being a writer and sets out on a journey to discover a more profound meaning for his life.
I really enjoyed the nostalgia of this one! While I do think he is a great writer I struggle at times with the religious references. That aside his writing is very evocative and beautiful.

DancingPhoenix I‘m in the same boat with the religious references. Trying to power through & finish it though! 5y

Has anyone else read this? As is so often the case with #paulocoelho, the story takes a backseat to the prosaic, lyric words he uses to tell it. Awesome insight to his beautiful mind. #hippie

This is an interesting part travelogue collection of events that happened to the author during the 70‘s. It felt, to me, more of an autobiography than fiction as it felt so real. It did jump around a bit, like a persons thought process and once you get used to that it flows well

An interesting,absorbing read.

I would like to thank the Author/the Publishers/NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

I wish it had been better. I was really bored most of the way through. It just sort meandered along without a clear purpose. Loved The Alchemist, didn‘t love this one. The cover‘s awesome though.
