“and he can feel how the whole tree resents him and despises him for not becoming its #glory of leaves” #QuotsySep21 from “Quince” by Anne Szumigalski. One of my all-time favourite poems!

Driving by John Newlove

“You become the country.
You are by yourself in that channel of snow
and pines and pines,
whether the pines and snow flow backwards smoothly,
whether you drive or you stop or you walk or you sit.

This land waits. It watches. How beautifully desolate
our country is, out of the snug cities,
and how it fits a human.”

This has always been a favourite poem of mine. #Winter #QuotsyDec19 #PoetryMatters

at the local bar the farmers
get drunk on #beer and double whiskies
the crop is heading out
too late to re-seed but for the moment
it is forgotten
as they begin to dream again

maybe the crop will come yet
maybe

This is one of my favourite mugs & the tagged book is one of my favourite poetry anthologies. The shelf in the background is one of my two living room “overflow” shelves which, as the name suggests, holds things I either can‘t fit or don‘t want in the library. #SpringIntoReading #BooksandBeverage

Clwojick Love this mug. 6y
CouronneDhiver I have the same one - got it for Christmas 🎄 6y

Renewable Glory - Elizabeth Brewster

This poem speaks to me so much more as an adult than it did back when I was a teenager scribbling maudlin poems about jewel-coloured skies and the sacredness of memory. The last lines remind me that sometimes, under all the youthful idealism, lofty ideas, and naïveté, there's a glimmer of truth:

"Nevertheless

there is
unfading
something I hesitate to call
as I did then

glory"

#Wind #Remember #PoetryMatters

Nute I like believing that glory can always come again. Thanks for sharing this.🙂 6y

I first read Quince by Anne Szumigalski in high school (which was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away) and it's stuck with me all these years. It is still of my favourites from this anthology. #Poetry #Writing #PoetryMatters @LazyDays

TK-421 @Nute Yes, it is! I pulled a few quotes from the introduction & back cover copy that I think are a good description of the various yet similar styles in this book:

This anthology showcases the work of 30 poets whose "voices are as varied as the landscape's grasslands, sand dunes, fields, and forests." A number of these poets "reject formal lyricism in favour of the loosely structured colloquial poem." "Many of the...writers choose to write ?
6y
TK-421 what [Patrick] Lane has identified as a common prairie form -- 'the anecdotal lyric', a mix of lyric and narrative resulting in an imagistic, anecdotal poetry." "A related but different vernacular form...is the dramatic monologue." "The effect of the Prairies on the mind and of the poems is varied, often ambivalent, and always personal." ? 6y
TK-421 "Many of the poems talk about poetry, and most of them comment on the genre in a humorous or irreverent manner." 6y

I just realized the #PoetryMatters photo challenge is going on. How on earth did I miss this awesome challenge?!? Seems I've been in a bit of a daze lately due to work stress & sleep deprivation. My favourite poetry anthology is finally in the Litsy database, so I'm taking that as a sign & jumping in. The #Home prompt reminded me of this poem by Elizabeth Brewster: "Will I ever be at home in this country?/Will I ever be home again away from it?"

merelybookish I love this! Brewster is from the same small town in NB as my Mum. I think she left that home and never went back. 😉 6y
LazyDays Thanks for playing! 6y
