Mary, Queen of Scots
Mary, Queen of Scots: Pride, Passion and a Kingdom Lost | Jenny Wormald
2 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Mary, Queen of Scots, was one of history's most romantically tragic figures. Her endless plotting eventually led her to flee from Scotland and be imprisoned by her equally ambitious cousin and fellow queen--Elizabeth of England--who later ordered Mary to be beheaded in 1587. This book looks at her tragedy. of photos.

This is not a biography, more an analysis of Mary as a ruler, within the specific Scottish context. It assumes the reader has substantial knowledge of Scottish and English history, however if you persist you can "read around it" and figure out what's going on. Very enjoyable and readable.

Not a very long book, but one that requires a lot of the reader. Wormald focuses very narrowly on Mary‘s actual performance as Queen regnant and far, far less on the romantic or tragic elements of her life. Along the way, Wormald assumes that the reader has a decent grasp of the history and political situation in Stewart Scotland as well as that of France, Spain, England, the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, and biographies of major players.
