First book done for my McIlvanney prize longlist backlist personal challenge. I loved listening to the Scottish accent of the narrator as it added a nice depth to the story, but I think I would have enjoyed the story more had I read it in print. I‘ve seen reviews where people cried at the end and since I tend to be a crier, I feel like I failed to fully connect to the story. Still, it was a good crime procedural and I look forward to the next.

Starting listening to this book set in 1969 Glasgow where a serial killer is on the loose. Using this for #40Miles20Hours Challenge.

Not much walking possible yesterday due to the rain, only managed 0.55 miles, takes me to 13.75 miles and 4 hrs 35 minutes.

wanderinglynn Progress 🙌🏻 That‘s what‘s important! 5y
Andrew65 @wanderinglynn Thanks 😊 5y
KristenDuck Nice job! Today meant no walking for me - off and on showers are the worst 5y

Andrew65 @KristenDuck Thanks, yes a lot of rain today again, wrecks walking plans! 5y
gradcat I‘m wondering if this is the same McIlvanney who wrote the tagged book, which I‘m just finishing up. Only his first name is William...but it‘s written around the same time....? 5y
Cathythoughts I loved this one ❤️👍🏻 5y
rabbitprincess @gradcat William is Liam‘s father 😊 and both fine writers! (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @Cathythoughts Great to hear, I usually do love books set in Scotland. 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat @rabbitprincess That‘s good to know, thanks for the information. 😊 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 sounds like a book I'd like! 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat another book for me to check out! 5y
GHABI4ROSES Consistency is key, you still have this. 5y
Andrew65 @GHABI4ROSES wish this rain would go away! 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Think you‘d enjoy it. 5y
gradcat @rabbitprincess Thanks for enlightening me! I love the way William writes...I was actually reading sentences from tagged to my mother—he‘s that good, imho. I must try Liam now, I suppose...♥️ 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi I think he‘s a brilliant writer. I suspect you‘d like him a lot. How are you guys doing? Is Miles doing any better? ♥️♥️♥️ 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat hanging in there! Are you doing better? 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I'm going to look for it! 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi I‘m better, thank you. I left you a message below (on Andrew‘s travel post). Is Miles‘ back (& vision, for that matter) any better? ♥️♥️♥️ 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat hes about the same, eyes some better, back worse 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi Oh, gosh, I‘m so sorry his back is not better. I mean, what can you do? It‘s so hard to do anything right now... I‘m thinking of you ♥️ 5y

Gorgeously written Tartan Noir that lives up to its status as a prize winner. Hope there are future offerings featuring D.I. McCormack!

I was prompted to read this by @Cathythoughts with thanks as i really enjyd an impressive crime story. Set in late 60's Glasgow the author uses the unsolved Bible john crimes to craft his own story in which a yng detective seeks to solve a series of murders + a diamond heist. V atmospheric capturing a time period so well, but it is the character of di mccormack who i enjyd with a secret that increases the tension. Hope it becomes a series.

TrishB I read it because of Cathy too! A good one 👍🏻 6y
Cathythoughts I‘m so glad you liked it ... I thought it was brilliant & I really hope it becomes a series too 🤞🏻 6y

Great detective thriller - lots of twists and turns and sometimes reminding me of an episode of The Sweeney! I sort of guessed the final twist doing the brain equivalent of peeking through my fingers saying no!! 😮

MicheleinPhilly Is this a series? *please say no because I have too many* 6y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly only just out - so if it‘s a series it‘s the first! It has the potential to be.... 6y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly too many series, not enough hours in the day!! 6y

MicheleinPhilly It‘s sort of bizarre to see the title and think of it as something to do with murder. The Philly crew can attest: @Cinfhen @DivineDiana @EadieB 6y
EadieB @TrishB @MicheleinPhilly it is the 1st in the Duncan McCormack series which takes place in Glasgow 1969 and has nothing to do with Quakers or Philly. Solid 4 star read. (edited) 6y
DivineDiana Agree! 😲 6y
Cinfhen @MicheleinPhilly Im totally picturing the sweet little Quaker grandpa on the corner of my Life cereal box 😂😂😂 6y
Cinfhen And I‘m amazed at how many series Trish reads!!!! How can you keep all the plot lines straight???? 6y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen we do have Quaker Oats here - assuming similar! 6y
TrishB @Cinfhen lol! I‘m not sure I always do 😁 6y
Cinfhen Yes! Must be the same little man in the corner, wearing a hat, white hair 😜 6y
Cathythoughts I‘m so glad you liked it. 👍🏻. I really loved our mc .... I hope the next book won‘t take too long ... I thought I guessed the ending ( but there seemed to be a few .. ) I didn‘t guess the final end. 6y
Cathythoughts I was also saying “ No” and had tears for our mc 6y
TrishB @Cathythoughts he did good though 👍🏻 6y

Hoping to get some train reading in today. Off to a seminar in Birmingham. Travelling with a team member and hoping she‘s brought a book!
Reading this one after @Cathythoughts great review last week!

Cathythoughts Oh I hope you like it ! Look forward to your verdict ♥️👍🏻 6y
Tanisha_A Are there any vacancies at your work? Beside the fact that your work sounds interesting, i'd also like to join for the train rides. ☺️ 6y

Cathythoughts @andrew61 it‘s the first of his I‘ve read ... really liked it & will look out for the next in this series ( this was #1) I believe his father wrote books too , I wonder if you know of him or would recommend him. 6y
Cathythoughts @TrishB I‘ll look forward to your thoughts whenever you get there 👍🏻♥️ 6y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts I'd forgot that cathy. I have rd the 1st in the laidlaw series which was v good +keep meaning to rd the others but have forgotten the plot of so wd prob have to reread! I also have unread charity shop editions of 'docherty' and 'the big man'. I think ill dig them out soon. I found laidlaw when val macdermid referenced it on the bookshelf of one of her characters amongst others + he is the father of tartan noir. A talented family ☺ 6y
Cathythoughts @andrew61 thanks for the tip Andrew, I ve just got the first Laidlaw on kindle ... looking forward to reading this 👍🏻 6y
Cathythoughts @andrew61 started Laidlaw ... only just started but I‘m blown away by his writing ... this guy is brilliant! 👍🏻 (edited) 6y

I picked this up yesterday in Waterstones... just on a whim ( I‘d never heard of this author before) .... it‘s an excellent read 👍🏻.. DI McCormack is our MC ... Set in Glasgow 1969 , with serial killer The Quaker still on the loose.... I had to force myself to put it away & get some sleep last night ....

TrishB Love when that happens 👍🏻 6y

Liam McIlvanney‘s historical crime thriller (inspired by the real life unsolved Bible John case) is a slow-burn read that‘s rich in period and geographical detail and evocative of the criminal underworld while having an interesting main detective who I would be interested to read more of, but I felt that the antagonist was under-developed in a way that left me with more questions than answers, specifically regarding their motivation.

Liam McIlvanney is a fine writer, and he does a great job bringing late 1960s Glasgow to life. Interesting to compare this with Craig Robertson's Witness the Dead, which has a similar plot thread but also has a present-day storyline. I was less convinced about one narrative choice, but it was a minor blip in an otherwise good story.
